Henry Cavill To Star In & EP ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Film & TV Franchise As Amazon Studios Acquires Rights To Games Workshop Brand

Amazon Studios has made it official, confirming that it has secured global rights to the Warhammer 40,000 game from Games Workshop for Henry Cavill (Man of Steel) to star in and executive produce the Warhammer 40,000 franchise across all Amazon Studios productions. The agreement encompasses rights to the universe across TV series, film, and likely games and animation.

Since launching nearly 40 years ago, the Warhammer brand has expanded through GAW’s miniatures, sourcebooks, tabletop games, animations, novels, a wealth of licensed material, and video games.

Warhammer 40,000 is set in the far future, where humanity stands at the edge of what might be its brightest future, or its darkest age. The threats to humankind’s empire are many — traitors driven by the fires of ambition, alien empires sworn to reclaim the stars, and the corruption of reality by malevolent gods.

“Warhammer 40,000 has captured the imagination of fans of all ages, from all walks of life, and all over the world,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon and MGM Studios. “We are excited to work with Henry, Vertigo Entertainment, and Games Workshop across our Amazon entertainment businesses on this brilliant, immersive franchise for our global customers to experience for years to come.”

Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Natalie Viscuso (The Lego franchise) partnered with Cavill to secure the Warhammer 40,000 IP before taking it to Amazon Studios. Vertigo will executive produce with Cavill and GAW’s Andy Smillie and Max Bottrill alongside Amazon Studios.

“I have loved Warhammer since I was a boy, making this moment truly special for me. The opportunity to shepherd this cinematic universe from its inception is quite the honour and the responsibility,” said Cavill. “I couldn’t be more grateful for all the hard work put in by Vertigo, Amazon Studios and Games Workshop to make this happen. One step closer to making a nigh on lifelong dream come true.”

HC

For 30 years I have dreamt of seeing a Warhammer universe in live action. Now, after 22 years of experience in this industry, I finally feel that I have the skill set and experience to guide a Warhammer Cinematic Universe into life. Partnering with Natalie Viscuso at Vertigo has been a blessing beyond words, without her we might not have found the perfect home at Amazon. And having a home like Amazon will give us the freedom to be true to the massive scope of Warhammer. To all of you Warhammer fans out there, I promise to respect this IP that we love. I promise to bring you something familiar. And I endeavour to bring you something fantastic that is, as of yet, unseen.

Our first steps are to find our Filmmaker/Creator/Writer. Watch this space, my friends.

For The Emperor!

Did your head spin or hurt while writing all that geeky stuff? lol

Yeah. I wrote it quickly, so I could go lie down. Thank goodness HC's hot, because this geeky stuff he likes isn't doing my brain any good.

OK. But why the exec. prod. quote too?

Wrong quote. Should have been this one:

While there’s no details public about the possibilities for those future collaborations on the Warhammer Fantasy universes, it’s certainly a tantalising prospect for fans of Age of Sigmar and Warhammer The Old World.

Thank goodness HC's hot, because this geeky stuff he likes isn't doing my brain any good.

Says the nerd into chemistry.

I see. I guess the golden Angel Ann mentioned will have to do.

That's my future livelihood, smart arse, not my hobby. I don't have nerdy hobbies. The closest thing to a nerdy hobby would be me lusting over HC's geeky butt. zany_face

They should do some sort of multiverse, so HC can play three characters.

They can do, let's say, a vertical multi-time-verse. There's time-travel to past, now and future in one universe.

They can do, let's say, a horizontal multi-dimension-verse. There's dimension-travel among different universes existing at the same time.

In both types of verse, a universe consists of several worlds.

In both types of verse, there are two other variants of a person (so three), they all look similar, but they don't have the same name or job.

You had your geeky undies on, huh? That sounds doable. Although, all the CGI, armors and world building already look very expensive.

Henry Cavill Teases "Big Things" for His Warhammer 40K Series on Prime Video

"Warhammer is progressing very well," Cavill said. "Big things are happening, and we are very excited." The brief statement is Cavill's first public comments about the project, which he is an executive producer of, since Games Workshop confirmed that Amazon Studios had signed the contract to adapt the world of Warhammer 40K into a live-action project.

Cavill has long been a Warhammer 40K enthusiast and he's spoken out many times about his fandom of the grim dark game setting. In addition to having his own army of miniatures (he plays as the Emperor-guarding Adeptus Custodes, for those keeping track) and occasionally posting pictures of various novels he's reading, he's also visited Warhammer World, the factory/company headquarters of Games Workshop in Nottingham.

Interestingly, Games Workshop mentioned in their most recent financial filings that their agreement with Amazon Studios contains more than just Warhammer 40K. The financial filing also disclosed that the agreement includes provisions for Amazon to also make live-action projects set within the world of Warhammer Fantasy, the company's original fantasy setting. Amazon hasn't made any public comments about adapting Warhammer Fantasy, but it could mean that Cavill and Amazon have lots of Warhammer to keep them busy for years to come.

I think we all know Sam Rockwell's confusion. laughing

COLLIDER: I'm gonna ask the most serious question of the day, Henry. What current computer are you rocking?

CAVILL: I've recently just upgraded everything to the new MD5, new chip, new motherboard and 4090 as well.

ROCKWELL: What are you, a software engineer for God’s sake?

CAVILL: Yeah, everything is new. I upgraded the whole thing.

ROCKWELL: I don't know what he's talking about.

See, I'm not the only one who gets a headache from HC's geeky side. A perk of being the side piece is that I'll only have to deal with the lickable side of HC. His gf will have to deal with his geeky side. zany_face

Henry Cavill says heading up the Warhammer 40,000 cinematic universe is 'the greatest privilege of my professional career'

"It is the greatest privilege of my professional career to have this opportunity," Cavill said of the big-budget Warhammer 40,000 project, which he will both produce and star in. "I can't say too much, again it's early days still, but to have this opportunity to bring it to the screen and be at the tiller so it can be faithful, is key to me.

"This is the stuff I've been dealing with since I was a kid. This is the stuff I spend my free time daydreaming about, as an adult as well. And I get to bring it into life. And there is no greater reason that I joined the industry than doing something like this, and I'm very happy to be here."

His comments might come off to the casual observer as those of a guy trying to make lemons into a fine English ale, but Henry's Warhammer fandom is legitimate and well-documented. He spent his quarantine time during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic painting Warhammer miniatures; he has a little cameo in Total War: Warhammer 2; he interrupts interviews to talk about Warhammer; and if you happen to get a Warhammer reference wrong, he will politely but firmly correct you.
