Discuss Song of the Sea

There is a lot to commend this film, I can imagine it being captivating for viewers of a certain age (which is not a back-handed compliment) and I'm sure the creators achieved what they set out to do. But, if you are talking about an animation of such a straightforward tale being deserving of awards then it needs to hit certain standards audio/visually.

The animation, voiceovers and soundtrack all did little to engender any sense of wonder or draw out my inner child and the art style was limited in conveying human emotion. And I speak as someone who has had a lower lip tremble at a Looney Tunes (e.g. What's Opera Doc) In an animation with some nuance or deeper meaning then sound and vision becomes less essential, but not here.

I know not every animator has the resources of Warner Bros, Disney or Ghibli, and it's a solid effort. But let's not talk about it being a pinnacle of the medium.

Obviously you need to question your taste since it won awards because it is not so obvious. I think you should look up the word nuanced becasue I met an American who did not understand the word. My Inner child watched it over and over again but I am an artist in addition to an aesthete. Artists around the world were in awe of this film. Disney films are vulgar perhaps you prefer that Obvious kind of garish animation. Ciao.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess. Looking at the movie poster, if that leaves you "in awe" then it must be like 'When Harry Met Sally' when you go to an art gallery. I'm sure we'd all love to see some of your work as an artist that can be so dismissive of the entire Disney catalogue from the past 100 years. You must be really something... or?

I'm fully aware of the word nuanced. Can you point out any subtlety or layers that I overlooked in this incredibly simple tale?

You sent me a message asking me to point out the beautiful lyrical points of this film. I think not Fergoose, since you cannot appreciate or see them how can I point them out to you? LOL! You're So funny. I met this really obnoxious girl in Ohrid, and she thought she was going to get into "clown school" in Europe=Prague even!!!- becasue "the competition was easier." I lmao because the Europeans are tall and beautiful and thin and so absolutely graceful and she was a short fat pacific Northwesterner. I gently reminded her the competition is fiercest in Europe. I mean look at the difference between the beautiful Romanian and Russian gymnasts and the short 4'8 stocky American gymnasts who can tumble but have the grace of a bull in a a china shop. I remember on my gymnastics team was asked to teach the short ones how to dance and move it was utterly impossible. They were like male dwarves or weight lifters lol! Thanks for the memories.I mention this becasue Disney is like a short squat ungraceful gymnast, and the makers of Song of the Sea are like the graceful European Svetlana Korkhina.

I do not understand how the haunting Celtic musical score did not grab your attention as it did the critics' the world over. Nor do I understand how you fail to see the graphics during the transcendental scenes as pure genius. Maybe YOU Have a need for a more slapstick ,in- your- face cartoonish animation. Might I suggest Aladdin, or Pocahontas for you. I am sure you will enjoy them. Children of all ages as well as adults enjoyed and were in awe as were the critics of Song of the Sea. Sorry you cannot appreciate a more subtle tasteful tale. This film is art- Disney and Warner Brothers are NOT. It is the difference between an art film and a blockbuster. You are more a blockbuster type Disney person nothing to be ashamed of but do not try to come off as an aesthete when you actually have a poor aesthetic. No Disney film garnered as much attention fo r its animated cinematography as Song of the Sea. To each her own but do not try to take away from this obviously superior film becasue you prefer child like animation.

Again, you mention subtlety. Again I ask, what subtlety. This was a simple rendition of a simple tale. As plain as they come.

I appreciate the gymnastics tangent even if I dont agree with the comparison. The elegance of Korkhina I think would be less contentious than artistic quality of this film.
