Discuss The 39 Steps

I am really surprised that this remake was ever made. It is so old fashioned and silly. It starts off with the ubiquitous Eddie Marsan (Scudder) handing a book of code to Richard Hannay (Rupert Penry-Jones) who just happens to have a loaded revolver sitting on his coffee table when their breakfast is interrupted by a trio of German spies all dressed for the part in black macs and black trilby hats. The chase starts here !!! The script follows basic rules associated with the era apart from the intrepid heroine offering herself to the hero - in those days the hero would have dropped her like a hot brick !! There is an amusing scene where a fight takes place in a loch where the protagonists are obviously standing up to their waists in water whilst some fifty yards away a submarine surfaces !!

Right.

This one's for Penry-Jones' fans, new and used, because Penry-Jones carries the show here.

Correct, again.

Would be great for Rupert fans if he would dump her, and if she would stay dumped, and then he could continue to carry the show in peace.

And that is all because only a lovely, soft and captivating Madeleine Carroll (from the original adaptation, 1939) could balance the act, as Miss Carroll certainly could capture screen attention away, every 39 steps of the way, from even a compelling Penry-Jones.

If one wonderful star does not spoil fans, then the other certainly does in a sort of double-feature sense.
