Have never been able to catch it right from the beginning: Is Joe the guy Bobby was racing against?
Does the movie start when they're already in the cars or is there before a scene between Bobby and Emily?

Yes, they were definitely rivals. Joe and Bobby were the two who were racing at the beginning. What I just noticed was that Joe showed grief over the loss of Bobby. When Emily cried, so did he. Joe also looked very upset when Emily kissed Bobby. This leads me to believe that Joe and Bobby were friends but they were in love with the same woman. Maybe Emily was dating Joe or something and then Bobby came and wooed her away from him (and got her pregnant). I think that angle went unspoken, though.
