I heard somewhere that the original draft of the script of this movie was supposed to have Freder and Maria going to the moon? Sounds really contrived and would they not have meant it took to have place in a more futuristic setting than it ended up having? It had a seemingly then-contemporary one. I wonder if it was all just a rumor that this was ever supposed to be about F+M.
I mean was it seriously and professionally ever supposed to be a sequel to Metropolis? Sure, scriptwriter Thea Von Harbou could have merely and simply have scribbled down in rough draft (at home with husband Fritz Lang) the idea of Freder and Maria going to the moon. But did they really pitch this actual F+M idea to the film studios? Did it actually get that far before it was changed to two other lead characters?
PS How do you pronounce Freder? Like freedom or rhyme it with letter or better? It is much spookier if you pronounce it like freedom. I always thought like freedom was how you pronounced his name. But then I heard folks rhyme it with letter. Not as good that way!

I don't know whether I'm correct, but for some reason (possibly I heard someone say it on a Metropolis DVD extra) I've long pronounced that name "FRAY-der", like the word "trader".

That is another way to pronounce it. On the 2003 DVD from Kino they narrator of that version called him by name. I am not sure how he pronounced it. No longer have the DVD! Come to think of it he may have said "Frayder".

In an early US version I think they called him "Eric". Much easier to pronounce that!
