Discuss Beauty and the Beast

I'm surprised how many of my friends are watching this movie, not just those who are taking their kids, but also those who are going to see it for themselves as adults...

I've always thought of Beauty and the Beast as a movie for very young kids, even more so than I think superhero movies are for older kids and early adolescents...

I know I shouldn't be surprised in the era of adult colouring books and the popularity of harry potter among grown ups, but I was. I mean, this isn't young-adult, or escapism, this is a full on kids movie, right?

Am I missing something? Am I out of touch? Am I the only one who feels this way? What's your experience watching this as an adult?

I personnally got dragged there by my thirty years old sister hahahah ! I'm a movie fan in general, so I thought I'd give it a try.
I think many of us 80s and 90s children have grown up to those classics and are actually the group that is making them classics and who originated the whole Disney mania/princess craze that we have to suffer these days... They were very powerful symbols of our childhood and, because of the way they were marketed by Disney, we sort of never grew out of it. I remember as a teen (c2005) when the whole over marketing of the princesses began, most of the girls around me, even the Avril Lavigne -ish skater wannabes would associate with one. It sort of became the symbol of our generation (am I pushing!?).

I believe we might all be somewhat "disapointed" when we watch the cartoons now as they are what they are : cartoons. While our children imagination allowed us to transport those cartoon images to real life, our adult eyes find them less realistic/plausible... After all, Cinderella's shoe does not look like it might exist IRL, and Lumière does not really look like he's made of gold... Now those live action remakes allow us to relive the magic as what is displayed on screen is actually "real". There is a reason the Cinderella teaser poster was a picture or the shoe... It was what made us all dream as girls.

So it plays on our desires as children to see this beautiful cartoon universe turn to " real-life", and obviously the nostalgia is a factor. I knew I really was looking forward to both remakes and it was because of that, and I'm a twenty-six years-old litterature student, huge horror movie fan, confirmed GoT enthusiast and rock and roll performer walking around in cow boy boots while my sister is a quiet beautician who likes fashion and Hello Kitty. Go figure.

On a side note though she remarked that the scene with the wolves was rather intense and scary and she said she was glad she hadn't brought her children (4 and 2). Our theater was also filled with only adults (thoigh it was a late screening) and many of them couldn't help singing the songs XD

(If anyone wonders if we liked the film, no we didn't. I think she liked it better than I did, but I think she was a little let down.)

Animation is timeless and you think animation is all kids stuff? why like the live-action over them? nothing can ever replace animated classics and why realistic and plausable? and why be disappointed?

Just because a movie is rated PG or based on a fairytale, that doesn't mean that it's strictly intended for a child audience. Likewise, just because a person is an adult, that doesn't mean that they are restricted to watching films with mature content, like violence, sex/nudity and language.

Beauty and the Beast didn't even feel like a "children's movie" to me. It's just a romantic fantasy-musical for people of all ages to enjoy. It's probably even a little too dark for some kids. Plus, the cast is made up entirely of adults.

I went to see it because I'm a fan of the story and the animated film, I love the music, and I was curious to see how it all turned out.

I watched this for the nostalgia and hoo-boy was I nostalgia'd by this!

Hadn't seen the original in probably 18 years or so, so hearing the songs again and the iconic scenes from the original movie was very childhoody for me and I regret nothing.

Oops! open_mouth

You're out of touch and completely clueless. Beauty and the Beast is absolutely not for "very young kids". the introduction of the Beast as well as the fight scenes will really frighten them.

I watched it as an adult and absolutely loved it. Even my mother loved it. This movie can be appreciated by just about anyone. Young kids can enjoy it if they are not frightened to tears by the Beast.
