I watched the film because of its Best Picture awards. I regretted it. I took no joy in watching the film. This is a messed-up plot.
I thought it was appealing because of the video-game aspect (I like video games). But all the assaults, whether unwanted or invited, were repulsive to me.

What struck me the most is that the film mentions an idea for a video game where a disease wipes out dogs, humans create robot dogs and you play the 'Spartacus of the robot dogs'. That video game pitch has more conviction and realism than this absurdity.
I would speculate that Verhoeven was just having a riot seeing what he could get funding to do and get a serious actress to portray, but apparently there have been similar aspects of sexual violence in some of his other work?
The sub-plot of Elle's family and some of the dialogue and acting salvage this a little bit, but even then it is a bit overlong.
Definitely worth watching though for the jaw dropping craziness of most scenes, which is a rare thing to say for a film I give 4/10.
