The first part of the movie somehow reminds me of Adam, a sweet romantic comedy about Aspberger's syndrome, only with trashier dialogs and situations. Quite funny if one's not emotionally involved with the drama.
Had I not known beforehand it had to turn into a horror/thriller movie at some point, I might have appreciated it a bit more, like I did From Dusk Till Dawn back in the days, even if it's kind of superficial.
I am also disappointed because of the plot, quite unoriginal in my opinion. But most of all, because of the main character, whose behaviour I find hard to infer from his trauma, even moreso when he suddenly becomes a normal and entirely different person in the company of his wicked and bigoted grandma (great lines from her too).
This was my rambling review of a rambling movie...

I do agree that Owen's character arc was rather sudden but was probably due to time constraints. I thought it was not really unoriginal. Yes, dysfunctional family reconciliation is nothing new but this had some pretty original circumstances, IMHO.
