The filmmakers have been accused of knowing Nev was being catfished right from the start, but went along with it for the sake of the documentary. It is a bit odd that he wouldn't have immediately Googled Megan as so many of us with Internet access would have done.

The Internet was way different back in 2008 than it is today. MySpace was still a hot thing, while Facebook was still in its diapers. So was the awareness of people about different internet scams, identity theft and catfishing itself (the term that was invented thanks to this movie, btw).
In my opinion, the story is certainly plausible and believable. The only question is - how much of the footage is actually "real" and how much of it is re-creation for dramatic purposes? Either way it doesn't bother me that much since it was quite enjoyable to watch.
