Discuss Bruges-La-Morte

I came across this on vimeo. Quite an interesting film ,not too long at about 70 minutes. It’s about a man who still yearns for his dead wife, and one day he encounters someone who looks just like her. It’s a surreal, ghostly film, with a lot of evocative imagery.

Shades of Vertigo (they share the same source material, sort of), set in a very interesting ciy of Bruges, once nicknamed the Dead City.. hence, the title bruges la morte.

If you like 70’s era surreal “horror” films, check it out.

There was a 1981 film called Bruges die stille, based on the same story. A more literal adaptation but Bruges la morte evokes the atmosphere better.

A part of me wished Robert Eggers would adapt Bruges-la-morte instead of contemplating a remake of Nosferatu. He’d capture the same themes and mood but without the burden of rehashing yet again a very familar vampire tale.
