Discuss All My Good Countrymen

The 10/11/2020 Turner Classic Movies "TCM Imports" showed "The Firemen's Ball and "All My Good Countrymen." The subtitles were "night and day" different. "The Firemen's Ball" had modern, black-bordered white subtitles that could be read with ease. "All My Good Countrymen" English text was "at the bottom of the frame" and worse yet, "white on white," which disappeared completely when expanses of white washed out the text. This made figuring out what was going on an eye-straining guessing game, which I gave up after 30 minutes. I've seen this incompetent work in 1930's/Japanese films, which I thought was a thing of the past. Besides, did I really want to see a small Czech town turned into a "collective mess" under the Reds after the defeat of the Nazis in May, 1945? (Monochrome print shown.)
