This is not a pornographic movie so it's okay

When you Google this movie it is listed as a Pornographic Film. What exactly is the standard for what qualifies as porn on this site?

The issue is this was Rated R in 1977. This would not be Rated R by today's standards.

Do you agree that we should have the today's standards? Otherwise you'll have to rate for example some Charlie Chaplin films as adult.

The main problem here is that these movies are showing up within the API, when specifically asking for non adult content. The Apple App Store works within today's standards, and apps showing nudity within a movie poster run the risk of potentially being flagged and removed.

What is your solution for this? I believe that when an App is using the API and requesting Non Adult movies that this type of movie would be the type we are trying to filter out.

Hi SafeSearchOn,

Unfortunately what a third party does or doesn't consider to be adult or unsafe for general consumption isn't our problem. We're a movie database and use industry standard classifications to make these calls. We do have the adult flag, but adult is only intended for pornography (the adult film industry).

If there's some content that lives on the edge, then that is just the very nature of our industry and the content we serve.

Travis,

Thanks for the explanation.

Is there any way to add another attribute to the API that would allow filtering of Nudity in the Posters or Backdrop images? Even if it was not included in the query string, but just an attribute of the Movie Object returned in the JSON response. This would allow it to be filtered when parsing the JSON.

I would still like to limit the amount of Nudity being displayed. Some of the Movie Posters I've had show up are pretty graphic. A way to filter would be great.

Imo a good solution to this problem would be to remove the ability for normal users to change if a movie is adult or not (it's a pain in the ass as letterboxd user to have movies disappear because they get wrongly tagged as adult) The option could still exist while creating a new entry (would minimize this major annoyance)...

Meaning nonadult movies reported by users who dont know what adultmovies mean would remain non-adult

Another problem will be with the actors starring in this movies because they would be marked as adult, too, so it could be Robin Williams for example or Heiner Lauterbach would be marked as adult actors even they never appeared naked in a movie. When they will not show up by a normal search we will have a lot of duplicate entries in the future, and many duplicate movies also, one adult, one non-adult

I see, I believe I understand the use of the adult tag now. I do however think it would be useful to have a tag that denotes nudity within an image then. This would help weed out these images that could cause issues within the app. Is this something that would be possible?

Travis, Is there any way to append the API in some way that allows the JSON to show if the image contains Nudity?

Hi,

No, not at this time. There's an old ticket here that is about adding the ability to "tag" images. We hadn't discussed nudity being a valid tag but it certainly would be. This feature was more about classifying DVD covers, original theatrical posters or the more common on TMDb "neutered" images.

The reality is however, it's a fairly low priority and I don't see getting to it anytime soon. You can see that ticket is from 2011 :\
