A curious thing about the movie is that, though it is narrated by Frances/Baby years later, we get absolutely no indication of what happened after that summer vacation. Did the couple get together? Break up? Did outside events intrude -- maybe even the boy getting killed in the Vietnam War? Wouldn't this affect her memories. in retrospect?

I hear that the remake did fill in the blanks -- that they split but met again years later. Critics did not seem pleased with this.
