Discuss Montgomery Clift

Montgomery Clift is I think probably my favourite Hollywood Golden Age male star. He truly had everything going for him, from superb talent, captivating sensitive soulfulness, to the very best of looks. So tragic that the car crash he was in not only significantly altered his looks and so impacted his career, but also wound up truly ruining his life, and ultimately destroying him, due to the resultant alcohol and drug addictions.

Montgomery Clift was my first crush. In Red River, with John Wayne. A wonderful film, and he was wonderful in it.

I'm a huge fan of him in I Confess. Out of all his films, that's perhaps my favourite. (However I'm not crazy about Anne Baxter's as-usual-overripe performance in it.) Also I'm a huge fan of 1948's The Search. If you've never seen that, and have the opportunity to, be sure to check it out.

The Search is a beautiful film and his performance in it is superb. Red River too - what a breakthrough year he had in 1948!

My favourite, however, is From Here to Eternity, one of those classics that deserves its reputation and gets better with every viewing. Splendid stuff, with a perfect cast.

On paper Clift with his soulful eyes, sensitive manner and soft delivery should not have worked as the tough as nails Private Prewitt from James Jones' novel. But, just occasionally, sheer talent can overcome an apparent miscasting, and it's impossible to imagine the film without him.

Indeed, From Here to Eternity is outstanding, and Monty absolutely terrific in it.
