Discuss Steve Martin

It was 1977 or '78 at the Eastman Theatre in Rochester, NY. He was fresh and hilarious.

I recall that at one point a heckler started up. The crowd tried to hush him, but Steve just said, "No, that's O.K., I remember when I had my first beer." The crowd roared with laughter and we heard no more from the heckler.

He used that same line on his "A Wild and Crazy Guy" album (1978). Either he took it from the live concert you saw or, more likely, it was part of his routine at that time and the "heckler" was actually planted in the audience to afford him the opportunity to use the line. Either way, it's still a brilliant line.

Now that you mention it, I guess he probably was an audience plant. And you're right, either way, it is a brilliant line.
