Discuss The Thorn Birds

Pretty much everyone of my generation saw and was crazy about this miniseries.

I watched t.v. airings of it back in the day, a subsequent broadcast or two when it re-aired some years later, then the other year purchased the DVDs set (which so far remains unviewed) of it.

Everyone fell in love with beautiful Rachel Ward (portraying Meggie Cleary) via this production. It then resulted in her becoming a quite successful movie star for a while. Ward was never an amazing actress though. However her inexperience and conveyed naivete totally worked to her advantage in this series, and she came off very favourably.

Meggie's rose colour party dress: It was beautiful, and we all loved it at first. But it then got worn sooo many times by the Meggie character until we eventually wanted to never see it again!

Richard Chamberlain reclaimed major heartthrob standing and massive popularity via this series. He certainly looked handsome in the clerical robes.

The famous Fr. Ralph and Meggie reunion scene at the beach is definitely a classic t.v. miniseries moment.

I remember considering Mare Winningham really good in this. Back then she was quite big on t.v. for seems like a number of years. Excellent actress.

Barbara Stanwyck was, of course, terrific. By the way, who can ever forget the scene of her finding naked Fr. Ralph, drying off from the rain, out on her veranda and her standing there staring and admiring, and then expressing her desire?

Piper Laurie, Jean Simmons, Bryan Brown, and others are all wonderful in this.

Incidentally, thanks to this production, Rachel Ward and Bryan Brown wound up a real-life married couple.

I watched it in 2012 on Yt, then again recently. Viewing it as a mature adult versus an 80's Catholic HE girl, you gain a different perspective regarding the characters. For example; Ralph is a selfish jerk at times. In addition, Maggie comes off as an adult living in dream world. He was a priest for Pete's sake. But love is blind.
