PCs Jim Carver and Cass Rickman wander through a CID obbo, allowing suspect Micky Harris to go free. Trying to make amends, Carver tries to contact a former snout from his CID days, Steve Raines. As they make enquiries, Carver's old friend, nightclub manager Alan Brooks notices Carver's dissatisfaction with uniform work and offers him a job as security manager at his club. Carver finds Raines, now a junkie, who gives Rickman a duff lead on a building society robbery. Carver convinces Raines's estranged wife Alice to give him a second chance, and eventually Raines agrees to testify against Harris. With the nightclub job all but his, Carver reluctantly prepares to hand in his notice, but when the job just as quickly falls through, he turns to a hip flask of vodka in his locker to console himself...

On a night out with her friend Lynn, Cass Rickman meets two men, Jamie and Ben, who offer her some dope which she refuses. To her horror, Ben is arrested the next day by DS Boulton for possession of drugs, a charge which Ben manages to drop onto Rickman when he insists the drugs are hers. Rickman is investigated by CIB, and things look bad for her when her friend Lynn makes a statement that Cass took drugs the previous night. DS Beech and DS Boulton follow Lynn and discover that she is the drug dealer, and she is linked to another dealer, Cairns, whom Boulton has been after for a long time.

PC Klein and PC Taviner arrest two men fighting in the street. DC Danny Glaze is surprised to see one of the men is his old school friend Lol Redman. He is even more surprised when Redman is charged with racial assault after the other man, Devon Russell, says Redman called him a 'black bastard'. Redman is bailed, Glaze gives him lift and arranges to meet him in the pub later. As Glaze waits, Redman is arrested again outside Russell's house. DS McAllister visits Russell's wife whilst he makes a statement at the station, and she admits that she and Redman had an affair and that her husband is a violent and paranoid man, and that Redman was just concerned with her well-being. Back at the station, Russell claims to have a tape of Redman's verbal abuse, but the tape is inconclusive and Redman is released again, although he admits to Danny he did say those things in the heat of the moment. PC Dave Quinnan returns to duty, and is determined to prove to everyone that he's back to normal after his breakdown. Out in a panda car, Quinnan sees a man shot in the head in a van - he calls for assistance, but by the time reinforcements arrive, the victim, the van and the main witness have disappeared. Desperate to prove his sanity, Quinnan pursues the case vigourously, and enlists the help of DC Paul Riley's brother Joe, who asks the wrong people the wrong questions. PC Polly Page is outraged by a practical joke played by PC Taviner, but she and Quinnan get their revenge in a most amusing way.

Two men are brought in after their armed robbery gets out of hand and a security guard is shot. They seem to have a lot in common including a wife but for a couple of guys doing a robbery together there's no love lost between them and DS Debbie McAllister and DC Eva Sharpe are assigned to sort their stories out. Detective Superintendent Devlin from the MIT team is astounded at PC Taviner's 'good luck' in discovering both the bike that was used in Chief Inspector Conway's killing, and managing to tie Ian Burrows, Simpson's toe rag of a acquaintance, to it. Danny Glaze is long gone, as DCI Meadows discovers when he receives Glaze's warrant card in the post. Hemingway and Klein find a teenage girl being harrassed, and when a cyclist is hit by a stolen car during a chase with police, the prime suspect is one of the girl gang - Beth Tyler - the reluctant witness in a rape case several months previously. PC Des Taviner is devestated when he fails to revive a baby who appears to have died of SIDS, and Sgt. Sheelagh Murphy admits she is pregnant with his baby. DC Rob Thatcher notches up his first conquest at Sun Hill - PC Cathy Bradford, who is shocked when Polly Page's boyfriend Max proposes to her.

Murphy finds herself caught in the middle of a personal dilemma when she is asked to investigate a possible cot death. Taviner decides to put his priorities in order and to focus on Murphy and their baby. Hemmingway and Young have a falling out over different ways to approach a case. Thatcher continues to try and woo the entire female Sun Hill workforce, and sets his eyes upon new station reception officer Marilyn Chambers. He bets Klein he can get her into bed on the first date, but he soon finds himself in close competition with none other than Hollis. Taviner becomes determined to cover his tracks for the sake of his baby when Johnson continues to pressurise him over the Jeff Simpson case.

DC Terry Perkins is undercover in prison, where he investigates convicted paedophile Charles Mawdsley who is believed to be running a paedophile ring with the help of one of the prison guards. DS Ramani de Costa appears as a prison counsellor, acting as Terry's contact with the outside world, but when Terry opens up in a group therapy session, Ramani begins to suspect that he was abused as a child. By arresting a corrupt guard who was dealing drugs, Supt Okaro hopes to force Mawdsley to play his hand, but in interview, the guard reveals that the prison's assistant governor is also corrupt. Okaro and de Costa race to the prison just in time to stop Terry from being killed by Mawdsley. Meanwhile DI Neil Manson gets a call from a prisoner at the same nick who wants to pass on information about a huge planned diamond robbery - the grass is none other than Don Beech, Manson's former sergeant at Barton Street and former Sun Hill DS.

DCs Rob Thatcher and Ken Drummond are on an obbo watching a witness in a fraud case, when Ken's son Alex turns up on the doorstep in a state of shock. While on a night out with his mates to celebrate his 17th birthday, Alex believes he has killed a prostitute. Drummond leaves Alex with Thatcher, and rushes to the woman's flat - she is dead, and Ken hastily removes evidence from the scene (Alex's hat). With their obbo blown, and Thatcher suspecting their target has switched places with another person, he and Alex manage to salvage the operation when they find some vital evidence in the target's rubbish bin. When Ken informs Alex of the death, he runs off and is found the next morning threatening to jump off a building, but he is talked down by his father. Drummond replaces the evidence and reluctantly calls in MIT, and Alex is arrested. DI Neil Manson and DS Samantha Nixon discuss DI Cavanaugh's corruption and Don Beech's escape, and they know DCI Jack Meadows will be furious. Meadows a

PC Gabriel Kent and PC Kerry Young attend a call to what initially appears to be the case of a ""bunny-boiler"", Sharon Wallace, stalking her ex-boyfriend, Chris Loftus. Kent, however, sees the fear in the Sharon's eyes, and when she is later attacked, he probes further and discovers that the boyfriend is blackmailing her with some nude photos in his possession. Holding the threat of the incriminating CCTV tape of the bank explosion over her, Gabriel convinces a reluctant Kerry to distract Chris while he breaks into his flat and retrieves the photos. Mission accomplished, he tells Kerry he's wiped the tape, and she is so relieved, she nearly kisses him. Back at the station, PC Cameron Tait stuns Kerry further with a surprise marriage proposal. DI Neil Manson is cleared of any involvement in Don Beech's escape, but DCI Jack Meadows warns him he's still on thin ice. DC Ken Drummond is also relieved when his son is cleared of manslaughter.
