In The Firing Line
PC Smith is working undercover as a bodyguard for a South African drug importer named Tony Rourke. Rourke offers Smith a contract to kidnap and torture a senior police officer to find the location of a police informer they need kept quiet. Ordered by SO10's DCI Tasker to remain in place and find out more, Smith comes up with a plan to abduct the officer, who turns out to be Sun Hill's own DCI Meadows. Rourke and his right-hand man Jake begin to doubt Smithy's integrity, and end up executing his plan themselves. With DCI Meadows missing, a massive search is underway, until Smithy convinces Ken Stockley, the informant Rourke and his financier are after, to tell him not only Meadows' location but also the identity of Rourke's mysterious ""money man"" - Lucy Haslock, a City lawyer. SO19 raid the warehouse and recover Meadows, in bad shape but alive.

When the relief carry out a routine raid on a nightclub, The Pink Cockatoo, Carver is suspicious after he suspects that a face from his past was present at the scene. Later, he stops a driver who appears to be a little bit worse for wear, and discovers that it is none other than his former CID DS, Ted Roach. Carver encourages Roach to provide information on Mickey Owen, the owner of the club, in return for being let-off the drink-driving charge. However, his leak to the police soon turns out to be the driving force behind a harsh beating, warning him not to give evidence. Meanwhile, Quinnan uncovers a body on the marshes, and Lennox discovers a link between the deceased and The Pink Cockatoo.

Des's blackmailer starts to put the squeeze on. So after parting with his first instalment of cash he decides the only way out is intimidation or confession. Neither look particularly good for enhancing his career in the Police Force. The tenser Des becomes the more determined he is to find out who's behind the extortion and it's God help anyone who gets in his way. When Lee Dwyer gets caught displaying his graffiti artistry it's the more level-headed officers to the rescue. DI Alex Cullen has his work cut out keeping an eye on his delinquent cops. After witnessing June and Jim's mug hurling altercation he demands to know what their problem was. Jim's answer to healing the rift comes in the form of a quiet night out... and 3 choice little words. New PC's Luke Ashton and Kerry Young are called to a domestic incident at Lee Dwyer's house, so to teach his parents a lesson he plays runaway and visits a surprised Tony Stamp first thing in the morning. Insp. Gina Gold and PC Gemma Osbourne visit a local school to investigate reports of drug dealing. Osbourne runs into a teacher friend of hers, Caroline Cotton, who passes on a pornographic tape she conficated from a pupil. Osbourne passes the tape on to CID, but when Caroline arrives at the station, Osbourne decides to take DS Phil Hunter down a peg or two by setting him up with her lesbian friend. Sgt. June Ackland investigates a possibly racial assault on pub landlady Aisha Danvers, and sends PCs Jim Carver and Cathy Bradford undercover in the pub, an assignment that raises a few eyebrows given Carver's history of alcoholism. After a failed obbo on a possible gun buy at the pub, Bradford and Ackland suspect Carver has started drinking again. A furious Carver sets out to prove otherwise, and discovers that Danvers has actually set up her own drug and guns racket on the Larkmead. PC Des Taviner is given his own set of wheels - a bicycle - and hits the road in a new capacity as ward officer on the Coal Lane Estate. Sgt. Sheelagh Murphy is not so pleased when Taviner eagerly assists an attractive resident. An abandoned lorry leads Sun Hill officers to the discovery of a Chinese ""snakehead"" gang smuggling illegal immigrants into the country. The shooting and ritual disfigurement of one of the owners of the lorry company sees Sgt. Matt Boyden staring down the barrel of a gun when he attends the scene. Furious after Boyden's indiscretions with her daughter, Acting DI Nixon is reluctantly paired with the sergeant to find the gunman. DS Debbie McAllister's patience is wearing thin, as rape case witness Beth starts acting up and demanding perks for her testimony. Clarinda Blake and Tim Hardacre are seen arguing in an alley by Callum on his way home after a night out. Callum ends up being beaten up when he tries to defend the girl. When she is questioned Clarinda insists she was the victim of a mugging. It is soon revealed that Clarinda's son Andy had been dealing drugs for Tim and when she found out, she confronted the man. When Tim ends up being released Callum decides to track him.
