Discuss Star Trek

Up until the Thasians brought up they gave him his powers to survive and would never stop using them.

It's quite obvious after many years alone he would never learn how to cope living with humans.

Just finished the episode...

Think the obvious part isn't that Charlie "would never learn” and more about (after a while) his going: "why bother".

Anyway, on to Kirk...

1) Maybe Kirk thought Charlie could've been rehabbed because he seemed so keen to fit in. He was desperate to be liked…to be loved. He was eager to learn: asking questions, copying the crew's behavior, doing nice things for the Yeoman (Yeoperson?), working on his smile, joining in crew activities, etc. It would be natural to expect that someone working that hard to become ‘one-of-the-gang wasn't entirely unamendable.

2) Maybe Kirk believe that Charlie deserves another chance because he recognizes that Charlie is as much victim as ‘villain’? After all, Charlie raised Charlie. There was no one around to help him “constructively” channel his selfish/destructive/baddie behaviors (everyone has them). No doubt, Charlie was the only one among the crew who could count the number of times he’s heard: “No!“ - Stop!“ - ”Don’t Do That”! - “Because-I-Said-So! – “Go-To-Your-Room” - etc. while growing up.

3) Maybe Charlie’s heartfelt plea at the end reinforced Kirk’s earlier notion that all Charlie needed was time-and-attention to lead him down the right path. That is, his fear of being returned to the “void” of his previous existence with the Thasians would be enough of an incentive for him to curb his caustic ways. ( face_with_raised_eyebrow Of course, the fear of jail, or death, doesn’t keep the prisons from overflowing and hasn’t put the LI pharmaceuticals people out of business.)

I have to disagree with Kirk. "When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time."

ON ANOTHER NOTE: Thought the actor (Innocent. Deadly. Tragic.) was outstanding the role. Enjoyed the episode quite a bit. Don’t remember seeing him in anything else. But, do remember reading that he died rather recently.

I happened to catch an episode of CHiPs that he was in, long ago. Don't remember seeing him in anything else.

I have seen him in a couple of Westerns.

In War Wagon, he was the third man on the team with John Wayne and Kirk Douglas. He certainly held his own against the two stars.

In Young Billy Young, he played a role similar to Charlie in that he was a young man that thought he knew it all. It was up to Robert Mitchum to knock some sense into him so that he wouldn't end up getting killed by a villainous David Carradine.

Thanks.

Considering the actors you mentioned, et al.; he definitely was "rubbing shoulders". (For some reason "The War Wagon" rings a faint bell…but, pretty sure I've never seen it.)

Why didn't the Thasians save the Antares and it's crew…the way they did with the Enterprise?

Plot Hole Posse…

This is for you.

I now remember that he was also in a Columbo episode. Jose Ferrer was the murderer. (This is giving nothing away, of course. The audience knows who the murderer is before Columbo even appears on the screen.) His son was Robert Walker, who got his degree by plagiarizing his thesis.

This episode had an uncredited appearance by Robby the Robot. There is a boy genius named (haha) Stephen Spielberg who knows how to program Robby. This helps Columbo come up with an important clue. I don't think the real life Spielberg was super famous yet, but he did direct an early episode of Columbo so they named a character after him as in inside joke.

Anyway, Robert Walker gets to throw a Charliesque tantrum in the episode near the end as family secrets get uncovered. It was great fun.

The Antares blew up, which killed those people "properly." The others Charlie just displaced to another realm or something, and the main Thasians were able to bring them back from that. But they couldn't reassemble demolished bodies etc.

Was looking up Robert Walker on “Columbo”. Found this instead. Got distracted.

Posted the links on the thread "Last seen on..."

Was in ER waiting room for a friend of a friend. I overheard one-side of a multi-phone conversation that made me think of this Tread.

The guy (livid) was in the waiting room because his dad was in surgery. Seems the caregiver had failed to follow one simple rule. That is, his dad HAS TO BE on the caregiver’s left whenever he walks. Not front/not behind/not right. (Don’t thinking know how/why this made him more stable; but, apparently it did.)

Anyway…

Pretty sure the guy either called everyone on the family tree, or they called him. What caught my attention is that with everything else about the caretaker he poured into those conversations, he kept coming back to: You can’t teach common sense!

I’m thinking that maybe the lack of “common sense” had a lot to do with Charlie’s downfall. After all, common sense helps us to envision possible outcomes of our actions or inactions. Pretty sure it never occurred to Charlie that things could go any other way than how he intended. As my uncle would say; That Charlie ain't got a lick of common sense.

Robert Walker Jr. was an interesting actor. He appeared on 2 Twelve O'Clock High episodes and I saw him play a psycho who tried to rape Audra in a The Big Valley episode.
