Discuss The Fall

I think I'll have to watch it again before I'll be able to put all my thoughts into words! But I would love to hear your thoughts and impressions.

Okay you describe the qualities of a sociopath quite well and for parts of the movie he had already demonstrated them. What your theory doesn't fit well with is the fact that he eventually he decided to kill himself and take with him another violent almost-mad killer and NO ONE ELSE. That shows a deliberate sound mind! His doctor and Gibson BOTH survived! Gibson's revelation wasn't the first time she had tried to goad him into erupting. She was no closer to PROVING that he was faking. I think it makes better sense that he a) was genuinely amnesic and slowly got his memory back or b) never really lost his memory but because of Gibson's careful examination of his ENTIRE past he FULLY understood what was driving his deviant impulses all his life and decided to end it all. Both possibilities could explain his outburst and remember he DID ask his shrink if it was possible that he could be cured.

After watching all 3 seasons in row, for sure he was lying about having amnesia. The violent attack on Stella was because she exposed him.

Also a couple of subtle scenes; at the end of one episode, after talking to the nurse the camera stays on him and he appears to give a little smirk (indicating he was pleased with himself for making her sympathise with him). Then in the psychiatric ward when he meets the other inmate for the first time ( the one he killed), again he gives a little smile after feeding him the line that he is "The Belfast Strangler".

One minor thing I didn't like was that for all its realism, it was a very tenuous and extremely coincidental link which got him caught. I mean, the surgeon (Archie Punjabi's character) knew a friend from 10-15 years prior who had a boyfriend that liked attempted to strangle her?? And the said friend even admits she was into experimenting! I mean, what a stroke a luck.

Other than that, really enjoyed the series. A change from the guesswork of whodunnits, plus incredible acting by both Gillian Anderson and Jamie Dornan. Even the chief of police was great. Hope they make another season.
