Debate Danganronpa The Animation

Item: ダンガンロンパ 希望の学園と絶望の高校生 The Animation

Language: ja-JP

Type of Problem: Design_issue

Extra Details: Please add Season3 and Season4. Nobody did anything, so I'll report again.

Season2 is Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School - "Future".

"Danganronpa 3" has 3 seasons. So "Future" , "Despair" and "Hope".

Once that's done, I'll add the story of S3 and S4. Finally, I request to delete the crowded pages in other discussion.

Yes, this is wrong. Future and Despair should not be separated from each other. Either everything goes under a single Danganronpa show, or Future, Despair and Hope go under the Danganronpa 3 show. Having DR1, Future and Hope on one show and Despair on another makes no sense. If you observe the original air dates, you'll note that Future and Despair aired interleaved, and hope aired in the final slot for Despair. [1][2][3]

Even going by the English dub, you'll notice that Funimation lists both Future and Despair as seasons of DR3, with Hope as an episode of Despair:

Have you read the TV guidelines?

Ok, so time to go through the guidelines.

First question: Which of DR1, Future, Hope and Despair are seperate seasons?

Regarding the TV guidelines, they state:

For regular series and miniseries that have sequels, we usually try to mirror the networks. Was it broadcast as the next season or as the first season of a new series?

There was a many year gap between DR the animation and DR3 the animation. This argues for DR3 as a seperate series, but Future and Despair are part of that series, not this one.

Did the sequel use the same website or have a new one?

Here you can observe the DR3 website with both Future and Despair, but not DR1: https://www.nbcuni.co.jp/anime/danganronpa3/news/index00150000.html

Here you can observe the Danganrona the animation website, which only contains DR1 content: https://www.nbcuni.co.jp/rondorobe/anime/danganronpa/

Here is the translated episode listing for DR3, which you can see lists Future, Despair, and Hope: https://www-nbcuni-co-jp.translate.goog/anime/danganronpa3/story/index.html?_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en-GB

Here's a source indicating that Hope did air as the final episode of Despair to tie up Future and Despair, if the above is not enough for you: https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2016-09-22/danganronpa-3-anime-concludes-with-hope-arc-finale-on-september-29/.106778

Regarding the anime specific guidelines:

The main guidelines for animes are the same as with any other type of series. Our goal is to replicate how the TV series were originally released on their original network. The episodes of anime series should be in the exact order in which they were originally released in Japan.

Ok, so then you put DR3 in airing order, which is future ep1, despair ep1, (repeat until ep11), future ep 12, hope, as a single season. Source for interleaved airing: https://www.nbcuni.co.jp/anime/danganronpa3/onair/index.html

In most cases, the original airing order (how it was first released) will correspond to the order used by the official Japanese website (how it was supposed to be shown). However, we strongly recommend double-checking the original air dates and order with a trustworthy source.

Again, see above for the original airing order.

So by the guidelines, Future, Hope and Despair are not seperate seasons to each other, but are seperate to Danganronpa the animation.

Next question: Is DR3 a sequel to DR1, or a seperate show?

So this is where the split format of DR3 gets confusing, and why I guess the original decision was made. Despair is chronologically before DR1, Future is chronologically after DR1, and Hope is chronologically after Future, despite airing in Despair's time slot. However, simply being chronologically after a series in the same universe is not enough to qualify something as a sequel. You can see TMDB has made this decision before, e.g. Doctor Who (2005-) is listed as a different show to Doctor Who (1963-1995). Even in Anime, Love Live Sunshine is not listed as a season of Love Live School Idol Project, Yu-Gi-Oh GX is not listed as a season of Yu-Gi-Oh, etc.

So, what do the guidelines say?

Sequels series (i.e. a direct continuation of the story) are added within the same entry. When the episodes numbers are continuous, all episodes are added to the same season. When the episode count is restarted (i.e. the first episode is Episode 1), the new episodes are added as a new season.

  • Is Future Arc a direct continuation of the story in DR1?

No. Future Arc is a sequel to DR2, the video game, which is a sequel to DR1 the video game. DR1 the animation is an adapation of DR1, the video game. There is no anime adapation of DR2, nor did its content get covered in Danganronpa the animation. Future Arc without DR2 makes little sense, and the only thing animated to give the missing context is... Despair Arc. Which aired interleaved with Future Arc, shares the marketing name (Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak Academy), title, website, final episode, and season it ran in (albeit on a different day of the week). You could make a weak argument here about "Well, what would we do if the Jojo anime skipped a part? If there was no Stardust Crusaders, would Stone Ocean then have to be a seperate show?", but I don't feel this is a strong enough argument to tear Future Arc out of DR3 and leave Despair Arc behind.

  • Is Despair Arc a direct continuation of the story in DR1?

No, Despair Arc is a prequel to DR2, the video game.

  • Is Hope Arc a direct continuation of the story in DR1?

No, chronologically it's the final episode of Future Arc, but airing slot wise it's the final episode of Despair Arc.

So based on the guidelines, I feel there's a strong guideline supported argument against seperating Future and Despair from each other, and on the balance of things, Future and Despair are seperate from DR1. There's a weak argument for classifying Future Arc as a sequel to DR1, but not to the extent that it justifies seperating it from Hope or Despair. Were a DR2 anime to exist, that would make a stronger case for everything all under one banner, but its absence is being used to justify seperating Despair from DR1, and so I feel also justifies seperating Future from DR1. Having Danganronpa 3 the animation as a single entity, including both Future and Despair, but seperate from Danganronpa the animation is also what the original TV airing order did, what the original marketing did, what streaming sites do, and what DVD/Bluray releases do.

Was going to point this out again but seems this comment does the work for me? its funny how this is still open just shy of 2 years later but completely unactioned. anyone planning to actually fix issue or just continue to ignore it i mean theres 14 discussions on this anime and 11 of those are saying this right here. so maybe fix it?
