Discuss Sleepy Hollow

I know that the ratings haven't been stellar, but this season has been fun. One more season could help them rebuild the loss of fans who only watched for Nicole Beharie.

To be honest, I'm still baffled by why it was renewed. The moment the brain died they should have taken this show off life support.

How do you figure Abbie was the brain when Ichabod and Jenny are far more knowledgeable?

Abbie & Ichabod relationship, banter & chemistry is one of many reasons why the show was a hit. I don't mean brain as in intelligence but in what brings a body to life. The heart & brain is what keeps you alive. Each show has an actor or actors that is the heart of the show. Notice how when some actors leave a show, it goes down from there.

Its not that I think Abbie was a bad character, but I don't see the show has gone downhill since she left. If anything its gotten better since last season. I'm also glad to see they "upped" Jenny's role. Between the 2 sisters, I always found Jenny more interesting.

The show has turned into a typical procedural. The Abbie/Ichabod dynamic is what made the show special IMHO. I could care less about the new characters. None of them are interesting. Not their fault, it's that of the writers.

Judging by the dip in ratings, people don't find Jenny all that compelling. The chemistry between her and Ichabod just isn't as fiery.

The thing is, some of us LIKE procedurals. But even so, Sleepy Hollow isn't purely procedural as it does have some serialized elements. It has an overall arc that is revisited throughout the season. I find it hard to understand why people aren't finding Jenny as compelling, because she is a very interesting character; she has come farther than any other character, perhaps even farther than Ichabod, in her development. She went from being angry, almost to the point of being deranged, to a key player focused on their mission. I never thought of Ichabod and Abbie as being "fiery." Comedic yes, as she introduced Ichabod to the modern world, but not particularly exciting. But when Jenny shows up, you know something really cool is about to happen.

Sleepy Hollow was never meant to be a procedural, hence the decline in viewership.

How do you know it was never meant to be a procedural? Do you have some kind of inside information?

There is something funny about calling a supernatural/horror show a procedural, but I can see your point. But in essence Sleepy Hollow, especially in the monster of the week episodes has been procedural since the first season. It's all about figuring out how to kill the monster, luring the monster, and hoping like heck they were right (which they usually are in the end). Nothing wrong with this, it's still the basic story idea that drove The Night Stalker> X Files> Buffy the Vampire Slayer, etc.

It absolutely sucks there is no Abbie. No way around that. But they had no choice when Nichole Beharie decided to leave the show. If they were going forward they had to find a new dynamic. I think all things considered they did a good job. The vault puppies are sometimes a little cringy to watch, but Jenny is a terrific character with tons of knowledge and has known the same kind of loss as Ichabod. Diana is more central as a partner for Ichabod in the cases. She is a good character and I like they didn't do the obvious and made the new witness a child.

Sleepy Hollow started off as a serialized show with procedural elements. Did it have one off episodes in season one? Yes. But they tied together cohesively to reveal an in depth narrative. Unfortunately, there was a definite shift when Fox stepped in. The network felt the series needed to be more accessible to more viewers, so they kicked in the monster of the week storylines into high gear, making the show feel disjointed in my opinion. Focus was lost and a witnessed was sidelined because of it.

I do like that as well as having a MOTW, there was an overall narrative that being explored each season. The first season had them trying to stop Molaoch, the second rescuing Abby from Purgatory and trying to stop Moloch from trying to resurface agin, the third Pandora and the Ancient One, now we have Malcolm Dreyfuss to contend with and hopefully they can stop him before it's too late. If things don't end smoothly with these next few episodes, then it looks like we'll have another cliffhanger on our hands.

Part of the problem with Seasons after the first was Fox interference making them take a small number of episodes and force it to be much longer. A lot of the success of Season 1 was the taut storytelling by having few episodes. An amazingly strong supporting cast helped, too. They weren't able to achieve the same success in 2 and 3 for a number of reasons, some of which are understandable (Katrina never had that much to do except when in purgatory she could give clues. Bringing her into modern day messed up the chemistry between the characters. Hawley, although I liked him ok, was an unforced error that sidelined Jenny. Season 3 did much better imo bringing together Jenny and Joe, Ichabod and Abbie and it the group dynamic felt much better. But by that time, NB wanted to leave and that threw a monkey wrench into things.

Honestly, I was expecting a train wreck in Season 4, but I really do feel like the writing has improved and that the new characters aren't as annoying as I was afraid of. I've enjoyed each episode and would like to see it work out. That's my opinion but I respect the opinions of others who feel differently.
