In last night's new episode, I didn't catch or understand what was on the phone that the teenage girl in the "halfway house" program swiped from the outside bench. Was it just wanting to snap pictures of nice things, that made her feel happy to look at, that she wanted the phone for? That was the impression I got, though I didn't really clearly hear or understand that part, so am not sure. Meanwhile, did she actually call anyone on the phone, while she had it? Why did the social worker lady later sneak her a replacement phone?

I had the same take on the stolen phone ... I suppose the social worker is trying to bond with her by providing another but the reason still feels incomplete ..

Hopefully things with the girl will wind up going agreeably. But knowing how things tend to wind up, poorly and depressingly, for characters in past seasons of this series, we realize to not necessarily anticipate a bright or promising future for her.
Sad that the girl considers her longtime pimp the closest thing to real family she's ever had - and that she'd, indeed, love to be able to settle down and have a family with him. Ugh. Even sadder that no doubt a tremendous number of young runaways and castoffs are living in exactly that sort of mindset in real life.

The girl (Shea?) told the social worker that the only reason she wanted the phone was to take pictures. It brings her joy to be able to photograph beauty around her. The social worker has a heart, believes her, and gives her the replacement phone so that she can have one positive thing in her life. Of course, I can be incredibly naive, but I believe that's what's going on here.
This show is so depressing. I hope Shea has a better life waiting for her.

Jeez!!! This show does NOT pull any punches. Was not expecting THAT for Shea.

I've finally watched Sunday night's episode and, like you, sure didn't anticipate that. Yikes! Earlier in the season I generally anticipated that things for Shea probably would wind up not going well, but still was very surprised when what happened happened. It did feel entirely believable for this season though.
Meanwhile, I'm very curious what the deal is going to wind up being regarding the Gabrielle storyline. Clearly some sort of abuse is occurring, though a character has mentioned she (G) self-mutilates - though I have a feeling something else is what's actually happening.
That was an intense episode - I think this season's most compelling one. I wonder how things will wrap up in the little bit of time remaining to this season.

Same here. I'm positively terrified to think Clair is going to take out her marital and business problems on poor Gabrielle. This show is freakin riveting. Hands down the BEST scripted drama on network tv.

Agreed, Roger. This season started out, and proceeded, as a "slow burn" for quite a while, but now is definitely in full swing, and in entirely realistic, believable seeming ways.

I thought the social worker gave her a camera instead of a phone...
