Backcountry Discovery Routes Films – Since 2010 we have produced both short films and feature length documentaries to inspire, educate and promote safety for adventure motorcycle travel in the backcountry. These productions are distributed by Touratech-USA and Butler Motorcycle Maps. The DVDs are available for purchase at motorcycle dealerships, online retail outlets and at film premiere events in major cities. Many of these productions are also available for live streaming on Vimeo and Amazon Prime. Many of the short videos can be found on YouTube.

The Washington Backcountry Discovery Route (WABDR) is a scenic route across Washington State from Oregon to Canada through the Cascade Mountain Range. The 600-mile route follows a connection of mostly unpaved back roads that can be ridden on dual-sport and adventure motorcycles or driven in 4×4 and high-clearance 4WD vehicles. The route is usually snow-free July through September. When Bryce Stevens and Andrew Cull won the 2010 Overland Flag Competition for their proposal to create an off-road route across the state of Washington, they decided to make their vision a reality. In the spring of 2010, the two adventure motorcyclists from the Northwest began scouting and mapping a new off-road route across Washington State from Oregon to Canada for dual-sport adventure motorcycles and 4×4 vehicles.

THE UTBDR:

The Utah Backcountry Discovery Route, or UTBDR, is a scenic driving route across the state of Utah, from Arizona to Idaho, for dual-sport adventure motorcycles and 4×4 vehicles. This 871 mile long south-north route uses mostly un-paved backroads and will pass through a number of iconic locations including Moab, Valley of the Gods, the Abajo and La Sal Mountain Ranges, Nine Mile Canyon, and the northern Wasatch Mountains.

The Colorado Backcountry Discovery Route is a scenic ride across the state of Colorado, beginning in Four Corners and finishing at the Wyoming Border. The route has been created specifically for dual-sport and adventure motorcyclists who are interested in exploring Colorado’s majestic high-mountain ranges and historic mining country. This 675-mile south-to-north route utilizes many remote and high-elevation dirt roads and leads riders through a number of iconic locations including Telluride, San Juan Mountains, Continental Divide, Collegiate Range, Northern Rocky Mountains and historic Leadville, along the Colorado River. This exciting documentary gives you an in-depth look into the creation and first expedition of the COBDR. Follow a group of riders on large adventure touring motorcycles including KTM 990 Adventures, Yamaha Super Tenere XT1200Z, and a BMW R1200GS, tackle some of the toughest terrain while traversing the beautiful Colorado backcountry.

The AZBDR is a scenic ride across the state of Arizona, beginning at the Mexico border and finishing at the Utah border. The route has been created specifically for dual-sport and adventure motorcyclists who are interested in exploring Arizona’s remote back-country. This 750-mile south-to-north route utilizes many remote dirt roads and leads riders through iconic locations including the Mogollon Rim, Sunset Crater National Monument, Grand Canyon and the Navajo Nation. The AZBDR documentary provides an in-depth look into the creation and first expedition of the AZBDR. Follow a group of riders on adventure and dual-sport motorcycles including the Yamaha WR250R, KTM 990 Adventures, BMW F800GS and the 2013 R1200GS water-cooled, as they tackle some of the toughest terrain and enjoy the stunning and varied landscapes of Arizona’s remote backcountry including historic old west towns, remote deserts, pine-covered mountains, beautiful canyons and Native American landscapes.

The IDBDR is a scenic ride across the state of Idaho, beginning in Jarbidge, NV and finishing at the Canadian border. The route has been created specifically for dual-sport and adventure motorcyclists who are interested in exploring Idaho’s remote backcountry. This 1,300-mile south-to-north route utilizes mainly dirt roads and leads riders across mountain ranges to isolated lookout towers, natural hot springs, old west mining towns, historic cemeteries, and the infamous Magruder Corridor and Lolo Motoway. The IDBDR documentary provides an in-depth look into the creation and first expedition of the IDBDR. Follow a group of riders on adventure and dual-sport motorcycles including BMW R1200GS and GS Adventure, F800 GS and KTM 990 Adventures, as they tackle the longest BDR yet.

The route has been created specifically for dual-sport and adventure motorcyclists who are interested in exploring New Mexico’s remote backcountry. This 1,200-mile south-to-north route utilizes mainly dirt roads and leads riders through New Mexico’s scenic and challenging terrain including high-elevation forests & mountains, deserts and canyons, Riders on the NMBDR will experience the unique culture and history of New Mexico’s rural towns, native reservations, historic locations & more. The NMBDR documentary provides an in-depth look into the creation and first expedition of the NMBDR. Follow a group of riders on adventure and dual-sport motorcycles including BMW and KTM as they tackle the most diverse BDR yet.

The NVBDR is a scenic ride across Nevada, beginning in Oatman, AZ, and finishing in Jarbidge, NV. Created for dual-sport and adventure motorcyclists, this 900-mile south-to-north route primarily uses dirt roads to lead riders through Nevada’s expansive deserts, open sagebrush valleys, and seemingly endless mountain ranges. In rural Nevada, you’ll experience historic saloons and relics from it’s rich mining history. The state’s maverick spirit remains, and you’ll see ghost towns, artifacts, desert sculptures, murals, the world’s largest car forest, jackrabbits, antelope and even wild mustangs. Most importantly, the film reveals miles of meandering two-track roads that are just perfect for spending time on an adventure motorcycle.

MABDR is a scenic ride for dual-sport and adventure motorcycles that uses dirt, gravel and paved roads to wind through remote parts of Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. Starting in Damascus Virginia, and ending in Lawrenceville, Tioga County, PA, this 1,080-mile route, primarily uses forest roads and rural country lanes, to lead riders through the Appalachian mountains, majestic forests, bucolic farming landscapes, Amish country, and locations that played pivotal roles in early American history.

The CABDR-South is the ninth route developed by the BDR non-profit for dual-sport and adventure motorcycle travel, and the first Wintertime BDR. Free GPS tracks and travel resources for this route are available on RideBDR.com. The film features 4-time Baja 1000 Champion and Dakar Rally Racer Quinn Cody of KTM, along with the BDR Team, taking a first run on the new Southern California route. The spectacular yet challenging 820-mile ride across the south-eastern region of California, starts in Yuma, AZ, and ends in Benton, CA. Primarily using rugged two-track and remote dirt roads the route leads riders through majestic canyons, rocky riverbeds, and sandy washes of California’s famous deserts and national preserves. You’ll experience quirky desert enclaves and ghost towns, visit historic mines, see ancient petroglyphs and intaglios, dip in healing mineral hot springs and ride among the unique Joshua trees in the Mojave National preserve.

The NEBDR is the tenth route developed by the BDR non-profit organization for dual-sport and adventure motorcycle travel. Free GPS tracks, travel resources, and the waterproof Butler Motorcycle Map will be available on RideBDR.com on February 1. The film features eight-time AMA National Enduro Champion Mike Lafferty of KTM, and international ADV celebrity and BMW International GS Trophy team member, Jocelin Snow, along with BDR board members. Taking a first run on the NEBDR, the team tests their endurance and skills on an epic 1,400-mile backcountry tour of the Northeast region up to the Canadian border. The route meanders through seven states and nearly a dozen state forests on rustic dirt and gravel roads, challenging seasonal and class 4 roads, and twisty tarmac.

The Wyoming Backcountry Discovery Route is a multi-day off-pavement ride for dual-sport and adventure motorcycles through the most dramatic and rugged landscapes in Wyoming. Beginning in Baggs, WY, the route traces the mountain ranges to the east through the Sierra Madre and Medicine Bow Ranges, crosses west to the Wind River Range, then goes back east and north through the Bighorn Mountains, eventually ending at a remote Wyoming-Montana border. Almost every section includes some moderately technical riding, as the remote two-track flows through regions of vast high-desert, short-grass prairies, and alpine climates. You will experience expansive views from the summit of two different 11,000-foot mountains, cross two major rim escarpments and pass through many other seldom visited areas and historic mining towns. This is the most remote BDR, so plan ahead and be prepared to have a true backcountry adventure.
