Il giovane studente Yu Te (Gordon Liu) aiuta il suo maestro a recapitare messaggi della resistenza contro gli oppressori tartari attraverso il negozio di pesce di suo padre. Scoperto il trucco, i messaggi venivano inseriti nei pesci, i funzionari del governo distruggono la scuola ed il negozio uccidendo il padre di Yu Te il maestro ed i suoi compagni di scuola.

Cina, anni Venti del secolo scorso. La guerra tra vari signorotti locali infiamma il gigante asiatico, provocando morte e distruzione. Uno di questi, lo sprezzante Hou Jie (Andy Lau), uccide crudelmente il suo avversario Huo Long, rifugiatosi all’interno del tempio di Shaolin. La sua bramosia lo porterà successivamente a progettare l’assassinio di Song Hu, suo fratello di sangue e a scontrarsi con il suo secondo, Cao Man (Nicholas Tse), mettendo a rischio la sua stessa esistenza e quella dei suoi familiari, in abissi di violenza senza fine.

In ancient China, Zhi Ming trains at the legendary Northern Shaolin temple to avenge the death of his father at the hands of a nefarious magistrate.

Three North Shaolin teachers are called on by the Manchus to teach their soldiers and are urged to challenge the current South Shaolin teachers. They defeat the South Shaolin teachers and, that night, the head general kills the South Shaolin teachers and blames their death on the North Shaolin teachers. The South Shaolin master sends more of his pupils, who are killed accidentally by the North Shaolin teachers. He finally sends two more of his students to train with old masters and trains one student himself with the goal of finally defeating the North Shaolin experts.

Hu Te et al. escape the burning Shaolin temple after the Qing soldiers destroyed it in Shaolin Temple. The group of 5 decide to develop secret codes to identify fellow patriots, enlist those patriots and eventually meet up again to escape to the south away from the Qings, and also identify the traitor who sold out Shaolin temple. Ma Fu Yi, joins the Qing top fighters to eliminate the rebels but is exposed by Ma Chao-Tsing who gets captured by Ma Fu Yi. Hu meets up with a group of Shaolin men secretly posing as bandits to rescue Ma as their leader is killed in the process, thus the bandits join the rest of the Shaolin patriots.

Non sapendo come fare per recuperare il loro salario pieno, i lavoratori assoldano un attore che dovrà impersonare un monaco del tempio di Shaolin, esperto in arti marziali. Il proprietario però lo smaschera e punisce tutti quelli che hanno architettato il piano. L'attore, sentendo di aver deluso quei poveretti decide allora di recarsi proprio al tempio di Shaolin per chiedere di venire ammesso all'insegnamento del kung fu.

Scomparso l'ultimo imperatore della dinastia Ming, la Cina è preda degli usurpatori Man Chu. Nei territori occupati, l'ultimo baluardo di libertà è rappresentato dal monastero di Shao Li, dove sotto la direzione del saggio Decano, i bonzi sono allo stesso tempo grandi asceti e cultori del karatè.

La dinastia manciù dei Ching è ormai al potere in Cina, ma in molti rimpiangono gli spodestati Ming: si formano così dei movimenti di resistenza che mirano a riportare sul trono la precedente dinastia autoctona. Tra questi uno dei più pericolosi è quello formato dai monaci Shaolin, insuperabili maestri di arti marziali.A loro si oppone il clan Wu Tang, esperti combattenti di origine cinese come gli Shaolin, ma che hanno deciso di parteggiare per i manciù per accrescere la propria fama e potenza. Per questa ragione il maestro del clan Wu Tang manda i suoi discepoli ad uccidere i principali combattenti Shaolin, dando inizio ad una faida tra cinesi che porterà solo lutti e disgrazie per entrambe le fazioni impegnate.
