That's true, even "Tooth Fairy (2010)" was a small success at the Box Office. slight_smile

Dwayne Johnson is just a likable guy and definitely a rising star. I've never been a fan of the Baywatch show, but this actually looks hilarious!

It doesn't appear that it is going to be a flop. It pulled in 5 million on Thurs and will likely get another 30 through Memorial day weekend. It will be interested to see how much Pirates 5 will make.

Every actor has a flop at some point. It's inevitable. Johnson will be just fine though. He's joining the DCEU and still has a few more Fast and Furious films; plus a potential Hobbs spinoff movie. He's got nothing to worry about.

Why Baywatch Bombed at Box Office

Looks like we overestimated The Rock as an automatic box office draw.

I don't think Dwayne Johnson is a box office draw; at least I don't think he can open a picture by himself. I think he tends to work well as a "+1" but can you name a single movie that wasn't already a franchise that became a blockbuster because he was in it? He has a very likable film presence, but look at the movies he's been in (I've sorted them highest-grossing to lowest.)

  • Furious 7 $353,007,020
  • Moana (Voice) $248,757,044
  • Fast & Furious 6 $238,679,850
  • The Fate of the Furious $222,904,855
  • Fast Five $209,837,675
  • The Mummy Returns $202,019,785
  • San Andreas $155,190,832
  • Get Smart $130,319,208
  • Central Intelligence $127,440,871
  • G.I. Joe: Retaliation $122,523,060
  • The Other Guys $119,219,978
  • Journey 2: The Mysterious Island $103,860,290
  • The Scorpion King $91,047,077
  • The Game Plan $90,648,202
  • Hercules (2014) $72,688,614
  • Race to Witch Mountain $67,172,594
  • Tooth Fairy $60,022,256
  • Be Cool $56,046,979
  • Pain and Gain $49,875,291
  • The Rundown $47,726,342
  • Walking Tall $46,437,717
  • Snitch $42,930,462
  • Planet 51 (Voice) $42,194,060
  • Gridiron Gang $38,432,823
  • Doom $28,212,337
  • Baywatch $27,606,514
  • Faster $23,240,020
  • Reno 911!: Miami (Cameo) $20,342,161
  • Jem and the Holograms (Cameo) $2,184,640
  • Southland Tales $275,380

Notice that most films that have broken the $100M barrier in the US are either franchise pictures (Furious, Mummy), films in which his role is very small (Other Guys, Get Smart), or animated movies that I doubt half the audience knew Johnson was in it.

I tend to enjoy him in the movies I've seen him in, but he needs a better agent.

San Andreas is probably the best example of his highest "solo" B.O. Probably why it got greenlit for a sequel.

I wouldn't say the 100 million domestic box office milestone is necessary "the" marker for success. A lot of it has to do with how much the film cost in the first place. San Andres, Central Intelligence and Pain and Gain were all hits based off their budgets.

To be honest, I think Johnson is one of the few actors left in Hollywood who can sell tickets based on his name alone. Baywatch may be a flop, but it's one of the very few flops of his career. He's definitely gonna rebound and continue to do well.

San Andreas is the only one that exclusively featured Johnson, though. CI had Kevin Hart, himself a significant draw and P&G had Mark Wahlberg. I'm not saying he's NOT a draw, only that he rarely opens a $100M movie by himself. Is that a problem for him? Not that I can see. He's apparently still the highest-paid actor in the industry today.

Only Cruise can really open a movie globally... The Rock is a face, Cruise is a name...

A name that a lot of people are getting tired of though. I heard The Mummy wasn't doing to well and I don't think his next film is going to be all that stellar either.
