@AlienFanatic : That would be nice, but would the creator of Valerian cooperate after seeing what bad reviews this movie got?

I liked this better than Star Wars VIII... I enjoyed the acting just because it wasn't the same hero archetypes we get in every other movie!

@e3m88 sunglasses You make a good point.

@Maria Kelly Well as for the bad reviews this movie certainly has split viewers opinions in two between the ones who really love it and those who just generally hate it .But in all fairness I agree with e3m88 about the acting and being a fan of the original comics I can tell that the acting of the DeHaan and Delevingne was quite spot on and in line with the source material (where Valérian is a bit of a knuckle-head,lazy,always late,a bit of a womaniser(despite being in love with Laureline) and not the one to question orders or overthink things too much)

I enjoyed it! The white tall female aliens looked as impressive as anything done in Avatar. Star Wars is so deeply rooted in popular culture it's hard for new or less known sci-fi material to have a chance. I guess some movie goers didn't want to give it a chance which is a shame. It did gross more money outside the US but the overall WW box office figure wasn't too impressive.

Currently watching Valérian on DVD on my 100hz CRT (using S-VHS) and with true high quality dolby 5.1. multichannel sound so it's like having a small cinema over here.

you know what, this movie reminds me of those epic sci-fi fantasies films that was released in the 80s that was supposed to be the next big thing but flopped and later on becomes cult classics.

Any one of those was better than this pile of garbage! : It was incredibly stupid.

@tlm550:😢 I had high hopes for this movie. I adored The Fifth Element, and although I know that Valerian was not an original screenplay but based on the French graphic novel series, I thought, well Luc Busson can make this work.

But I was wrong.

It might not have been a masterpiece but I still find the adaptation quite decent and what I remember from The 5th Element was that the story wasn't THAT original to begin with plus the acting of Willis and Jovovich was a bit wooden as well Although it the case of Willis it fitted his deadpan delivery. In the case of Valerian it could have been better but I think both DeHaan and Delevingne actual stayed pretty close to the characters in the graphic novels ,but as far as World building and alien species I was amazed what Besson brought to the screen I thought it was far more imaginative than most movies of late(Star Wars included) Plus I found that Besson made a nice mix of the novels Empire Of A Thousand Planets and The Ambassador Of Shadows Although my idea would have been to start at the beginning of the Valérian and Laureline novels which is kind of an origins story (The 4th Dimension and The City Of Shifting Water ) where we learn interesting things about our main characters like Laureline is actually from France from the year 1000 and that Valérian took her back to the future with him after she rescues him.And on point Valérian is kind of a reference to the Valerian root which is known for it relaxing properties hence the relaxed, carefree and deadpan character he is.Still I somehow hope that they try a new movie because storywise it could provide for some rather interesting and unusual stories and there is even a possibility for a sequel set of movies since the latter 4-5 novels are actual part of a bigger story where somebody is messing with the past and Valérian and Laureline (through all sorts of adventures) have to find out who and prevent him and reset the alterations.

@Nexus71 : The Valerian graphic novels aren't well known in the US, which may have been a problem for us uncultured Americans. :-)

There are plenty of cultured Americans. Your problem is that you see a few dumbass hillbillies, rednecks, or our piece of sh*t communist, hate-fueled idiot President and you think we are all the same.

That sucks! I'd hoped Europeans would appreciate it more and save it from bombing.> It seems as if it's been too Americanised for me. I and other people feel the same.

It was actually pretty fun, for the type of movie that it is... But once Dunkirk was released it was game over... That was another level of cinema, imo...

I suppose so. It's older than I realised (it was just shown on TV tonight)
