Found this to be a solid enough thriller up until the final quarter of the film where it sort of seems to stumble. I didn't quite understand the killers motive for the murders and how he chose the victims. Did I miss it or did they offer some kind of a motive for the killings? Or were we to infer that it was a result of a lifetime of wrongdoings and injustice towards the killer? Or was the point that the killer wanted to be remembered for the killings? The killer already seemed to have fame and status, so not sure that is it either.

I think all of those things influenced them.
Though the overarching motive was to have their NAME recognised for all time, not just their actions - which is why Kildare did what he did at the end - to deny them that.

They wanted their name etched in stone and not ice.
At least that's how they tried to sell it, it made no sense to me either really.
