..decapitate our hero and take over? That threw me off, it seemed like so quick a transition.

Saw it awhile ago and you are right. It was pretty quick but I think that was the point. You let your guard down and you are done for if you are in the monster hunting business. I was impressed with what they managed to do with such a small budget.
