What do the British Men of Letters want with the Colt?

We know it can't kill Lucifer since he is one of the five things IT can't kill. So if they are thinking of killing the devil's spawn child, will it work?
What other reason do they want the Colt so badly, and why did they ask Mary to bring it to them?

I thought the Colt completely destroys a creature, soul included. That could be handy if you don't want something (or someone) coming back from the dead later.
On a related note, poor Renny. Straight oblivion for that guy.
