Yusuke receives his first real case as Spirit Detective. Three demon thieves have muscled their way into King Yama's sacred vault, stealing the three Artifacts of Darkness. Yusuke must recover the artifacts and bring the thieves to justice before they unleash dark and deadly powers on the people of Earth.

In his first match of the tournament, Yusuke faces an impossible disadvantage. He can't see a thing in the pitch-black arena, but a hi-tech helmet allows Kibano to follow Yusuke's every move. Even if the battle-worn detective can survive Kibano, he'll have to fight his second match immediately -— against a lethal ninja!

Two of the four Saint Beasts are dead -- or so Yusuke and his team believe! But in the chamber of Seiryu, a Beast who can trap his enemies in ice, an unexpected guest arrives. How can two Beasts in one room be stopped? And why is Hiei, a cold-hearted rogue, suddenly beset with emotion?

One giant battle stands in the way of rescuing Yukina. Yusuke and Kuwabara versus the leaders of the demon mercenaries, the immensely powerful and bizarre - Toguro Brothers! What will it take to defeat the freakish duo in a fight where anything goes? Elsewhere, Kurama races to stop Hiei, who is entering Tarukane's stronghold with his own violent agenda!

Kurama takes on Roto after the end of Kuwabara and Rinku's fight. Roto earns Kurama's wrathful vengeance by taking his mother hostage.

Yusuke jumps out of his slumber, ready for the final fight against a new fighter named Chu. He’s rude, he’s crude -and he claims to be Team Rokuyukai’s true leader.

Okay, brief recap to what happened last episode: Kurama has just had his arms and legs frozen, but used his spirit energy through his hair when he used the rose whip to slice Gama apart. And like in the last episode, Gama tries to hit Kurama through his wounds, splattering his blood all over him. Right before he dies, Gama tells Kurama that his blood has sealed his spirit energy. Uh-oh. To make matters worse, the next member, Touya is ready to fight and avenge his dead teammate. Touya attacks just as Gama's first spell wears off, allowing him to move, but with his energy still sealed, he's still in a bad situation. Kurama spends all of the time trying to keep himself from getting killed by Touya's attacks. Eventually, he forms a plan to defeat Touya, and gets himself cut on purpose to plant one of his death plant seeds inside his own body right so it can manifest as a weapon.

Genkai tells Yusuke his final test is to kill her. Yusuke has second thoughts. He meets Genkai in a cave and says he can't do it. She tells him that was the first part of the test. She would not give her power to someone who would kill her. She reveals her source of power is her Spirit Wave Orb. She takes out a bright ball of energy. Yusuke's test is to absorb it. He agrees to the terms, though the test could kill him. She puts it in him. He feels nothing at first, but then he collapses and pain. In a new ring, the semifinals begin. Team Urameshi enters, missing two of their members (Genkai and Yusuke). They are facing Team Uraotogi. Hiei and Shishiwakamaru agree to choose the fight by dice. The first fight is Hiei vs Makintaro. Hiei wips out his katana. Makintaro asks him to make a move. Hiei holds up Makintaro severed arm. Makintaro reveals his attack, the Axe-blade fist. Hiei is too quick for him and stabs his head. Meanwhile, Genkai watches Yusuke suffer through her test.

The members of Team Toguro demonstrate their power in the semifinals by utterly defeating another team with minimal effort.

During his match with Toguro, Kuwabara is told of Genkai's death. With extreme rage Kuwabara strikes Toguro with the Trial Sword splitting the demon in half! The arena watches in horror as the evil Toguro rises from the arena floor unharmed.

With the Dark Tournament at an end, Yusuke must beign to cope with the loss of his best friend at the hands of Toguro. After Sakyo asks Koenma to take his life, the evil billionaire unveils his final evil plan to destroy the entire stadium with everyone still inside!

Somewhere in Mushiyori City, a psychic is forging a tunnel between the Demon and Human worlds. Yusuke has recruited Murota, a mind-reading human. But while trying to weed out the enemies by their thoughts, Murota was shot -- and the criminal mastermind made his introduction. The heroes have taken Murota to the hospital, where new danger awaits.

Yusuke, Kurama, Hiei, and Mitarai enter a cavern controlled by the tricky Gamemaster. Gamemaster's territory can be manipulated into a video game, a game where everyone must play by the rules in order to survive. Yusuke's team must win 4 rounds to move on, but is a victory possible against an adversary who can manipulate the rules?

Koenma's tactics have saved Yusuke for now. But mysteriously Yusuke won't allow the Prince of Spirit World to use his pacifier. While they discuss their next move, the terrible gateway between Demon World and Living World opens.

Yusuke and team return topside to the waiting arms of their friends. But all is not well. King Yama's soldiers arrive saying that they must destroy Yusuke once and for all. Could this be the end? How much energy does the Spirit Detective have after his exhausting battle with Sensui?

Just as Yusuke and Hiei were forced to confront their demons, Kurama boldly ventures through his own past. Yomi, one of the three Kings of Demon World has summoned his former partner in crime to his inner sanctum. What secrets haunt Kurama? And why has Yomi prepared for the worst?

As the main bouts of the Demon World tournament get underway, some of the best and most familiar fighters are removed rather quickly. While it looks like some of the fighters' motivations for entering aren't exactly what they seemed, they all have their eyes on one warrior as the prize--Yusuke.
