Discuss Marvel's Iron Fist

I really don't get what all the fuss is about. From what I've been hearing, this was supposed to have been the worst thing to have ever graced our screens.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's anything groundbreaking by any means. It's not onto anything new. But it's reasonably entertaining and fairly well made. There hasn't been any moment where I've been bored. As I say, I've only seen 4 episodes so maybe it takes a swift nosedive in episode 5.

With all the horribly made stuff you get on the Sci-Fi channel and things like The Vampire Diaries, dull, episodic nonsense like Agents of Shield and all those shoddy Buffy wannabees, how is this so detested in comparison?

It's certainly no Daredevil but I'd say it's at least of equal quality to Luke Cage, probably slightly better. And Cage never got the hate this does. A bit of indifference maybe, but not outright derision.

i can't comment as i have never watched ghost whisperer or baywatch nights. i'm from england - ghost whisperer did screen here, but it did not appeal to me.

Neither have I, I'm from Wales. They did screen in the UK. But anyway, I was just using them as an example of a certain mentality. The very reason I brought them up is because they wouldn't appeal to you . We can both imagine what they're like. A very trashy, lowest of the low ambition of quality and I'm curious if the Iron Fist detractors see Iron Fist in that way. Because what I see is a show that was made with a fairly high intention of aesthetic. Good cinematography, well framed, nice, careful slow rythm of editing, etc, etc. Intention of depth and themes. A show with issues absolutely. No arguments there, it's far from perfect.

Ok, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D then. How do you think it rates alongside that? That's a show I see as having very little redeeming qualities. Episodic, sets look like they're made of cardboard, wooden acting all around and the choreography in that makes Iron Fist look like The Raid.

I'm on episode 10 and I've seen worse. I find it strange 'tho that for the first time ever, the lead character is by far my least favourite. I can't decide if it's the actor or the character, but something about him bugs me.

i don't watch agents of shield either; i saw some trailers and it looked somewhat dull.

so i finished iron fist and i would give it a C. the main problem in my view is the casting of the lead, who just does not have any presence. i did not find him convincing, and when he would attempt to speak his lines with resolve, "i am the iron fist", " i can fight anyone", i didn't buy it. also his character did not seem fleshed out and seemed somewhat inconsistent. certainly iron fist did not have the self awareness and emotional/spiritual maturity that i would have expected of a monk of many years training. i could not understand why he was chosen to be the iron fist.

the script was quite variable i thought, and some comments seemed strangely out of place and pointless. i was quite taken aback when claire, in her last line, agreed to sit and eat pizza with danny and coleen, then basically told them, without any real context since immediately prior danny was talking about going back to kun-lun, that they were both effed up and needed psychiatric help before walking out. bearing in mind that this is a healthcare professional, it was rather jarring to hear, and it just did not flow. there were several examples of this during the series, where words did not have a natural progression.

i think it was too safe a choice to stick to the comic casting have a white man play the lead. i would have gone for iron fist being mixed heritage, say half causasian and half korean, which could have lead to some fantastic characterisation around trying to fit in when you don't feel you belong anywhere.

sometimes it was it bit jarring watching a white man lecture asian characters about their own culture.

on the plus side, there were some great supporting performances. i was particularly impressed with the actor who played ward - now he had presence - and carrie ann moss was a pleasure to watch whenever she came on screen.

i won't be watching a second series. bring on the defenders.

It is.

Granted, it would have made for some interesting characterisation. But people would have complained if they did make this change too. Probably even more so.

It is odd though. The countless times people have been in uproar when a character's race is changed from the source material. This has to be the first time in history I've ever heard complaints of a character's race not being changed. I bet that's a complaint the showrunners never predicted.

Haha. Yes, I guess it was.

I don't necessarily disagree with many of your comments. But I didn't see those issues as strong enough to render the show unenjoyable. My position has never been that this is The Wire or Game of Thrones. But that it's hate has been exaggerated.

He's from Banshee. He is good. As I've said before, Ward was my favourite character. And I preferred the whole white collar side of the story to the mystical side. But I did like how Danny came into this capitalist world as an outsider, suddenly having all this power but a completely different viewpoint. I liked that clash. And I think it was this aspect that kept the whole thing interesting for me.
