Absuelto una vez, culpable de por vida. Aksel Borgen es un exitoso hombre de negocios que, tras pasar 20 años en Asia, regresa a su hogar en un pueblo de Noruega para rescatar de la bancarrota a la empresa local que sostiene a la comunidad. Pero Aksel no es bien recibido por todos los habitantes de este idílico lugar en medio de los fiordos. Y es que 20 años atrás fue acusado del asesinato de su propia novia (hija de Eva, la presidenta de la compañía que ahora necesita una inyección financiera). Aunque fue absuelto, Aksel se vio obligado a abandonar el país para huir del estigma de su pasado. Ahora debe hacer frente a los prejuicios, las dudas y las acusaciones que todavía siguen presentes en la comunidad.

Aksel no está dispuesto a abandonar la lucha por su mayoría de accionariado en Solar Tech. Más y más gente del pueblo empiezan a ver a Aksel como un buen activo para la compañía y están dispuestos a olvidar el pasado. La familia Hansteen está dividida.

Aksel debe quedarse en Lifjord hasta que encuentre un nuevo líder de Solar Tech. Un conflicto surge en el seno de la familia Hansteen y la lealtad de Lars es puesta a prueba cuando le ofrecen un puesto como director. Tonje parece el único amigo de Aksel en el pueblo.

Cuando Angeline y su hijo Tim vienen a Lifjord, Aksel debe hablar a Tonje de Karine y su pasado, pero omite cierta información. Aksel pide ayuda a Angeline. Eve busca algún indicio contra Aksel que se le haya escapado a la policía.

Angeline ya no cree en la inocencia de Aksel, así que, para convencerla, éste recurre a Tonje en busca de ayuda. William busca una nueva oportunidad de negocio en el hotel. Eve intenta que Eric testifique en contra de Aksel acusándole de violento.

Tras recibir reveladores imágenes de Karine, Aksel emprende la búsqueda del asesino, pero cuanto más busca más dudas vuelve a generar sobre su inocencia. Solar Tech debe deshacerse de gente y Lars se ve obligado a cortar amistades. Eva sigue buscando indicios contra Aksel pero ahora duda de Tonje.

Aksel is still looking for the person who took the nude photos of Karine. His suspicions towards Per Olav increase when Aksel finds out he is beating his girlfriend, Åse.

Aksel discovers more people have been lying to him about the night of the murder. He is deeply conflicted and determined to leave Lifjord, but for his son's sake, he decides to believe in his own innocence.

The police are searching for Aksel’s bloody t-shirt from 20 years ago. Aksel still can’t remember anything from the night Karine died, but confesses to the murder anyway.

As Aksel reconciles with his past and hometown, Angeline returns to Lifjord. Tonje and Aksel are still caught up in an affair, and Aksel realises that he's going to be forced to choose between his two lives.

Lifjord is left shaken after William's suicide attempt, while Aksel is impatient for the world to know the truth about Karine's death.

It is now Aksel's word against Eva and William's, and there are few signs that Aksel will be believed. Aksel challenges Eva to tell the truth but gets nowhere.

Aksel turns directly to Eva with his suspicions of incest, but she denies everything. He then goes to Kristoffersen and accuses him of ignoring the obvious out of consideration for the powerful Hansteen family.

The court case is about to begin and open up old wounds for everyone involved. Eva has hired a hard-hitting defence lawyer who stirs up public opinion against Aksel.

Shock overwhelms Lifjord after William's revelations. Aksel is convinced that he is lying. When Karoline encourages Aksel to take the stand and give his own account of what happened the night of the murder, he refuses.

After the trial's outcome, Aksel is furious and insists on fighting for the truth until his final breath. Karoline tries to get him to realise that he can't win this fight.

A crushed Erik returns after several hours of searching for Helene, who has vanished without a trace. He blames Aksel for pushing her too far, and fears that something has happened to her.

While Lifjord is shaken by another tragedy, Aksel calls the police and demands his brother's release. The only people with a motive for killing Helene are William and Eva, who knew the truth and could expose their lies.
