Surely this is plagiarism?
Why would the producers of Star Trek Discovery want a spoof version to be broadcast at the same time as the 'official' version? CBS should have taken legal action against Fox. Very surprised CBS have allowed this show to go ahead.

Interstellar space is very dark, and if they were just looking out windows to pilot the ship etc, then the bridge should also be dark. But they're using viewscreen technology that can amplify light and increase contrast and even magnify a whole bunch.

Well sure, space itself is dark. But the bridges of both Kirk and Picard's Enterprises are nice and bright. The battle bridge on the Enterprise-D is dark, but that's to give it a more threatening feel for dramatic reasons. Is that the reason the bridge of the Discovery is dark? I don't know. I personally prefer the bright look, which the Orville also has.

My point was that it doesn't need to be dark on the Discovery bridge - and it wasn't necessary on the Shenzhou bridge either, but it was dark there too - because they're using viewing technology not windows. But I doubt the darkness is because of Lorca's eyes even just for Discovery. More likely it's because the producers think it looks cooler and sets off the control panels, holographic effects, etc.

I would guess you're right...a dramatic effect to subtlety wow the audience to try and get them to be entertained more and tune in next week--i.e., keep subscribing to CBS All Access--and not so much to give a feel for the story or the actual situation if it was real...even less so if it has nothing to do with Lorca's eyes. Good point.

Imo The Orville DEFINITELY PLAGIARIZES STAR TREK. The very fact that many of its fans think it is 'more Trek' than DSC kind of makes the point, doesn't it?. Why haven't the TO producers been sued yet? I don't know. Perhaps CBS is getting a cut; perhaps they are waiting for Disney to become the parent owner (deeper pockets) before they sue; perhaps they are comfortable with TO keeping it's "Family Guy humor ' loving fans ...for now; perhaps they think TO will eventually implode, making the point that DSC is superior for them; perhaps it is a combination of all these factors. I, for one, would not be surprised if we find out that TO is sued one of these days.

Crappy? The Orville is far better than Discovery. You say you weren't meaning The Orville when you said crappy but the thread was about The Orville, so I'm not sure what "crappy FAKE Star Trek shows" you are talking about.

I’m sorry you feel that way about post-Berman Star Trek. I think the first season of Discovery sucked, but like what they have done with it, enjoy Picard and Lower Decks, and really looking forward to Strange New Worlds. But, I’m also someone whose favorite Star Trek series is Enterprise and feel Gene L. Co on should get a lot more credit for Star Trek than Gene Roddenberry, so I’m in the minority all over the board. (But I do love The Orville.)

Both STD and STP are but Star Trek in name and apart from some memberberries these shows have very little to do with the earlier Star Trek series and movies. The fact that modern Trek even can't get it's ACTUAL science right is a sign on the wall that the the writers and producers have no to little understanding of the world their franchise inhabits.
