I really enjoyed this, start to finish it was a lot better than I had anticipated. I expected it to be lower budget and just a fun trip down memory lane but it was so much more. It had good writing, plot, pacing, casting, tone and a whole lot more going for it.

I really loved the dynamic between Johnny and his students. At first they were weak, shy, kind kids who were bullied. He tried to teach them to strike first, strike hard, no mercy. Mainly, no mercy. He taught them how to fight back and take charge, but this also taught them how to be assholes and in the end they kind of turned into the same kinda of shitty people they wanted to learn to defend themselves against. I loved this, because at first Johnny seemed like an ass, partly due to circumstances in life, but even so, it's without excuse to be a dick to anyone, and it seemed he was a dick to most people. Just angry and bitter, but his students tried to teach him compassion, kindness, empathy and restraint....and in the end, he displayed some of that. I loved how it all mirrored in the end.

Anyway, I'm hoping it does well and they continue forward with Season 2. They certainly teased it well enough.

The return of Kreese, returning to Mr. Miyagi's home and Miyagi-do, Samantha showing off her some moves of her own and rekindling her interest.

What a great show.

I just started watching last night. Big fan of the movie. Came it in 1984 when I was 16. I’ve disected movie like the zaprufer film in last 34 years. Absolutely loved this series. The nostalgia, the music. The way it paid homage to the original. Some of it was a it cheesy and predictable, but still. Loved this “ sequel” and seeing Danny and Johny continue their saga

I still have one to watch but so far its really good, the easter eggs alone make it worth it.

Did you notice Golf n' Stuff has the same hole in the sign it did before lol

I watched the whole season already. I loved the drama and story line and how it mirrored the original. Can't wait to see what season 2 brings to the table.

Doing a rewatch and in E8 it's hilarious how much info Johnny leaves out of the story when he's telling Miguel about his beef with Daniel.

But everything he said was true. Daniel put his nose where it did t belong. New kid in town moving on Johnny’s girl. Sucker punched him at the beach, Wet with him W the hose at the dance ruining his weed.. Daniel should have gotten more beatings. And that final crane kick was illegal. Daniel should have been disqualified

That's not exactly how it went compared to how he told it.

What really happens is Daniel asks him to leave her alone, he pushes him to the ground, then Daniel sucker punches him and gets his ass handed back to him. Then they trip him at school and get into a little fight...Then what happens next? They ride him off the hill...Then he gets soaked at the dance, then they chase him and beat the shit out of him. Johnnys friends are trying to stop him telling him that Daniel has had enough, he keeps at it, then Mr Miyagi comes in to help.

Compare that to how Johnny tells it.

Daniel throws the sucker punch and he puts him in his place. But then he jumps from that scene to when he wet him in the bathroom, then said they went to confront him about it and Mr. Miyagi jumped them.

I think you should rewatch the movie, lol.

Not saying Daniel wasn't to blame, not at all. They're both to blame. But it's not as black and white as the movies makes it out to be, nor is it as black and white as Johnnys version in the show makes it out to be.

You sound like a super fan like me. It’s also time to point out to you that me Miyagi was a fraud. My evidence:

Mr. Miyagi from Karate Kid is the second-most-beloved short, wise, broken-English-speaking fighting master to come out of the '80s, which is saying a lot. Thanks to Karate Kid 2, however, he's probably also a pathetic con man.

The first Karate Kid strongly implies that Miyagi was born to Japanese parents in America. We're told he attended UCLA, was forced into an internment camp during World War II, and then fought in the 442nd Division -- a unit almost entirely made out of Japanese-American soldiers. Miyagi in particular crane-kicked so many Nazis that he was awarded a Medal of Honor.

In the second film, however, the entire plot revolves around a completely different backstory: It turns out Miyagi is actually a native-born Japanese man who was forced to leave when he let his boner do the talking instead of his fists. He had upset his hometown by proposing marriage to an already-betrothed girl, and had to flee to America.

Except no Japanese people were allowed to immigrate to the United States after 1924. Even if Miyagi left in 1923, he would have to be incredibly young to be allowed to fight in World War II 20 years later. If he proposed when he was 18, that means he would have attended UCLA and joined the army when he was almost in his 40s, making him roughly a million years old in the 1980s. (Pat Morita was 52 on the first Karate Kid, incidentally.) So either the government made an exception, Miyagi proposed and ran away as a toddler ... or he's a big fat liar.

Miyagi doesn't speak very highly of his Medal of Honor, but that's probably because he bought the thing at a pawn shop. (How many of the 464 WWII recipients do you think ended up as anonymous maintenance workers?) He likely never fought in the army, and never stepped inside UCLA, except perhaps as a janitor. He must have come to America after the war and simply decided to lie about his past to avoid the whole "violent, widespread racism against Japanese people" thing. Then he kept going, ultimately even coming up with the perfect con: tricking young, bullied kids into waxing cars for him.

I'm going to have to pay attention to all of this the next time I watch them, it's something I never even considered, lol. But it could definitely make sense.

Just binged this, great stuff. I was 12 when I saw Karate kid 2 and had to wait until I was old enough to watch the first one (strict parents/ KK1 was a cert 15 and 2 was Pg in the UK) but this took me right back... Loads of nods to the original in a way that wasn't too in your face and a great story told from many different angles, Miguel's proud mother, Johnny's son, Daniel's family as well as Johnny and Daniel and almost every other character that was involved. What could have been a cheap 80s throwback nostalgia trip was a very engaging story handled very well. I've literally just finished watching this and after seeing Kreese turn up at the end I am absolutely buzzing for the next series. 10/10

Oh and just noticed that my 5* vote took this from a 90% to 95% on here :)
