The first episode establishes that the father has clinical narcissistic personality disorder. Not only does Dobrev's character say it straight out, but she's also done the one and only thing anyone can do about someone with NPD - cut them completely out of her life (non-contact). There is no question as to what's what here.

But then Dobrev forgets all about keeping it non-contact and allows her father to wander back into her life which is just nuts. And to make it worse, Tone Bell's mother insists that the father be involved. She says all the things people who don't know anything about NPDs say - giving him the benefit of the doubt, treating him like a normal father with normal flaws. Except at one point its mentioned that she is a therapist! Did she get her degree from a diploma mill? Because pushing someone to reconcile with a known NPD is malpractice.

So the show is basically a light-hearted comedy with a vaguely narcissistic supporting character. If I didn't know anything about NPD, I could watch it and laugh, the actors all carry the show with their personalities, especially Pamela Adlon's kid (who seems like she's 25 playing 16). But that's not how NPDs are in real life, not even close. Everything they touch turns to shit and this show is just glossing over that reality.

Its almost like an NPD is writing the show and trying to gaslight the audience into thinking that NPD is just a funny personality quirk. Which is totally something an NPD would do if they got the chance.

Its obvious the season finale will be the wedding. If the writers have any integrity the father will utterly ruin the wedding and not in a funny way, or at most it will be a dark comedic finale where the characters can't just laugh-off his shit the way they have so far.

If you don't know about NPD, spend 30 minutes reading the saddest place on reddit — Raised by Narcissists. The stories of mistreatment and abuse sound like something out of hollywood, but they are completely real and all too common.

I was hoping this show would help to teach about NPD - there is a lot of opportunity for humor in the disorder, just not so light-hearted. Gaslighting, flying-monkeys, love-bombing, golden-child & scapegoating, projection, etc are all both horrible and absurd at the same time. There is so much unmined potential, but so far this show hasn't even tried.

I like the show too. I thought Gary Cole would have a bigger part. His character seemed to have a lot of comedic potential. Maybe they will get a second season and can explore what you were hoping would be the central focus of the show.

Well I finally watched the finale and all I can say is good thing it was cancelled. Its like they went out of their way to be the exact opposite of the premise of the show's first couple of episodes.
