While it's apparently meant to be a dramedy, they could never find the right balance. Sometimes loopy, sometimes mawkish -- it's a weirdly confounding mix. The supporting cast really elevates the show, and in particular that fantastic actor who plays Patricia Cochran -- clearly channeling and even outdoing Vanessa Williams from Ugly Betty. The guy who plays the Southern-Fried bisexual egotist is good too. Could not stand the parents and their interactions with this grown-ass woman, and Bayer is good but better served playing comedic support and not dramatic lead. Shannon is engaging, but her character was just all over the place and poorly defined. The writing seemed to be the ultimate problem here. Still, if they'd gotten a second season, I suspect they could have righted the ship and gone longer with an improved show. Oh well. The cast deserves better next time.
