Rita, esponente dell’alta società milanese, si innamora di Carlo un giovane ingegnere appena arrivato in città. Il loro amore è ostacolato dal Commendatore Cesati, ex amante di Rita che ora sta ricattando la donna con la minaccia di bloccare i crediti a Carlo. Rita accetta il ricatto, lascia Carlo il quale – non sapendo nulla – torna a Biella per sposare un’ex fidanzata. Anni dopo Carlo riceve un telegramma in cui viene chiamato con urgenza presso un sanatorio, scoprirà che Rita – deceduta da poco – aveva abbandonato tutto vivendo nella miseria fino ad ammalarsi e morire.
