De film gaat over Anand Sehgal (Rajesh Khanna), een kankerpatiënt, die ondanks het kennen van dit feit niet wil genezen, maar het beste uit de rest van zijn het leven wil halen. Daartegen staat Bhaskar Banarjeee (Amitabh Bachchan), een gematigde arts, die de donkere kant van de wereld en de mensen van zijn omgeving ziet. De omgang van Bhaskar met Anand zorgt ervoor dat hij de kleuren van het leven achter al die wanhoop en ingewikkeldheid in zijn leven ziet en hem een les leert. Na zelf weer geluk te hebben gevonden en het leven van andere te hebben veranderd, verlaat Anand hen allen. Dit inspireert Bhaskar om een boek over het leven van Anand te schrijven.
Nadat haar moeder zelfmoord heeft gepleegd reist de 19-jarige Lucy Harmon naar Italië om haar portret te laten schilderen.
