I sommeren 1900 fødes to drenge i en frugtbar italiensk landbrugsregion. Den ene, Alfredo (Robert De Niro), vokser op i en velhavende familie, og den anden, Olmo (Gérard Depardieu), er søn af en fattig landarbejder. Hele det italienske samfund er i opbrud, og vi befinder os i perioden mellem feudalismens ophør og både fascismens og socialismens fødsel.
