William Benton, a rich British landowner and cattle baron was murdered, creating one of the most bizarre and sensational international scandals in history. Thomas Canning, an inexperienced photo journalist from London, is sent to Mexico seeking fame and glory but eventually he reaches the camp of Pancho Villa to be told several conflicting versions of Benton's murder.

Filmen skulle eftersigende have været instrueret af Sam Peckinpah (hvilket nok ville ha' gjort filmen bedre, eller hvertfald mere interessant), men han blev fyret og ind kom Buzz Kulik, der vist gjorde filmen lidt mere mild i tonen. "Villa Rides", er en gang underholdende men også ret typisk 60'er western, der forgæves søger efter en snært af realisme. Yul Brenner har igennem tiden haft et par fantastiske roller, som han bør huskes for, men han passer altså ikke rigtig ind i billedet som mexicaner, og så kunne jeg heller ikke lad være med at kigge på den sorte paryk, der vist fik lidt for meget opmærksomhed.
