1525. In the midst of the Spanish conquest of America, an idealistic friar plans, along with other soldiers of the crown, to escape from a devastating expedition that only seeks riches.

King Carlos II of Spain (r. 1665-1700) once sent his brother Luis to lead a military expedition into Albania and conquer that land for the Spaniards. Since Albania was a part of the dowry of Luis' wife, it seemed like a reasonable idea at the time. While that expedition and its final battle is the subject of this historical film, the scale involved can hardly do justice to the concept. The protagonists talk incessantly, and by the time they get down to the final grand battle, it turns out to be a skirmish between several dozen men.

Filmen handler om de muslimske osmanners erobring af Konstantinopel, det kristne Byzans eller det Østromerske Rige hovedstad indtil 1453.

Filmens første sekvens foregår i Medina 627, hvor profeten Muhammed forudsiger, at Konstantinopel bliver erobret, og velsigner den emir og den hær, der erobrer byen.Herefter springes til 1451, hvor osmannernes sultan netop er død, og hans søn Mehmet II overtager sultantitlen og kampen for at erobre Konstantinopel. I filmen skiftes hovedsageligt mellem scener hos Byzans kejser Konstantin XI Palaiologos og hans mænd i Konstantinopel og sekvenser blandt Mehmet II og hans rådgivere.
