A short film commemorating the 1927 doll exchange between the US and Japan organized by the Committee on World Friendship Among Children

Plastic dolls dance in the sky to a pop song. In a posthuman world, the perfect body is made of orange-yellow plastic in a factory in China. This figure without gender exists in a virtual space where illness, death and aesthetics are only absurd concepts. In 3-D animations, the film ponders on capitalism, virtuality and the human body.

In this fabulous full-color presentation Barbie expert Joe Blitman shares his vast knowledge of the nuts and bolts of collecting all things Barbie, including which dolls to buy, how to shop at a doll show, how to identify specific dolls and how to clean clothes or do repairs if a doll is damaged.

Restored to its original glory by the National Film Preservation Foundation back in 2005, this little Christmas film is one of our holiday favorites. Margaret Conneely (Chicago amateur filmmaker & CFA Collection namesake) frames stop-motion animation and trick photography with live action footage to fuel her very own Christmas fairy tale. FAIRY PRINCESS (1956) was Margaret Conneely's most successful amateur film, winning a slew of local awards, and being named one of the Photographic Society of America's 'Ten Best films of 1956.' Conneely's film was also awarded the PSA's 'Harris B. Tuttle Trophy'; named after Eastman Kodak's innovator of the 16mm format, this trophy was awarded annually for the best amateur storytelling film on a family theme. - Chicago Film Archives

Two sisters squabble and fight with each other over the course of their lives.

A wonderfully playful and symbolic manifestation of the spirit of childhood can be found in Dimitrie Osmanli’s short fiction debut. The film follows a little girl with her doll who meets a neighbourhood boy with his tank; after her doll is damaged we are invited into a surreal dream where dolls rise up against the boy and their face resembles the little girl he hurt. The rebellion of the dolls signifies a rebellion against the boy’s malice and essentially against his refusal to be like a child. The dream yields fruit: on waking up, the boy, grateful to be alive, has joy restored in his heart and runs to makes amends with the little girl. The Rebelion of the Dolls renders the concept of rebellion as an internal event: an uprising of the conscience against the spirit of cruelty and disobedience and as a lesson to the little boy shows true conscience restored in the spirit of gentleness.

A five-minute experimental film about the internal challenge of a Chinese toy painter as she is swept into a moment of artistic inspiration.
