A Marine stationed in the Philippines loses a hand in an accident and is discharged from the Corps. When the Japanese invade the Philippines, he is called back into service to rescue a general held by Filipino guerrillas behind Japanese lines. Attaching a steel prosthetic in place of his missing hand, he and his men set out on the mission, which turns out to be not quite what he was told it was.

Le capitaine John Larsen est manchot, et toute son amertume provient qu'il ne perdit pas sa main dans un combat honorable, mais à la suite d'un accident survenu par sa faute, alors qu'il était en état d'ivresse. Cependant il est fusilier-marin et une occasion magnifique s'offre à lui de se racheter à ses propres yeux. En 1941, les américains déclarent Manille ville ouverte et l'abandonnent aux japonais. Or, mission est donnée au bâtiment sur lequel embarque Larsen d'aller récupérer un général américain parachuté en territoire abandonné...
