Charles A. Post's portrayal of man-child Iscah Nicholas makes this movie for me. Post gets it absolutely spot-on right, with the childlike immature (sometimes frightened and whimpering, or pouting, always very possessive) ways, and even the movements, to the point where you - I, anyways - actually feel sorry for him, and wish things could somehow work out - though, of course, you realize that no way can or will they. It seems apparent that Nicholas is trying to, and wants, to do right (his perception of it) - if only everyone will respect what he perceives as his "authority".
Post gives a somehow endearingly terroristic performance (something I'm pretty confident I've never said about anyone before). Fantastic job!
Incidentally, that's one compelling and believable fight sequence near the end. Definitely exciting! The hero, John Woolfolk (portrayed by Frank Mayo), winds up looking (as does his hair), during and after it, thoroughly worked over!
Here's an interesting, informative TCM.com article about the movie, its making, and reception.
