This police investigation in a 19th century village combines visual beauty with the rigor of the mise-en-scène—the vertigo of the criminal motivations indivisible from the refined graphics of the images.

En 1840, sur le plateau enneigé de l'Aubrac, le capitaine de gendarmerie Langlois vient en plein hiver enquêter sur la disparition d'une jeune fille du village. Il tente de s'identifier à l'assassin afin de comprendre son comportement. L'assassin est « Monsieur V*** », ce qui peut vouloir signifier « Monsieur Voisin » : Le tueur est quelqu'un de très quelconque, voire un voisin tout à fait banal qui vous dit bonjour tous les jours.
