Portabella’s first feature, co-scripted by poet Joan Brossa, became one of the most influential works of the Barcelona avant-garde, although like all his early films, it circulated only in an underground fashion. Eschewing dialogue, the director constructs a non-narrative story in fragments that reveal the daily lives of an adulterous couple interspersed with a cryptic stream of unrelated imagery. Nocturno 29 começa onde No compteu amb els dits terminou: com uma tela preta e a materialidade da projeção. Ele aprofunda a futura estrutura Eisensteinesca dos filmes de Portabella que não avançam em tempo linear, mas sim por uma sucessão de cenas autônomas.

El primer largometraje de Pere Portabella se adscribió al experimentalismo más arriesgado, siguiendo vagamente los principios de la llamada "escuela de Barcelona". Pretende interrelacionar el cine con la vanguardia de las demás artes, y en este sentido resulta significativa la colaboración de personajes como el poeta Brossa, el compositor Mestres Quadreny y artistas plásticos como Tàpies, Saura o Joan Ponç. El resultado es tan atractivo como hermético.
