This was a decent film, albeit filled with inventions and the old habit of cramming in drama and romance into a story that should be strong enough to stand on it's own two legs and more closely adhere to reality.
Ironically, given the film's title, the final debate (and half hour) was flat out bad, to the extent I groaned. The earliest 'lesson' the debaters learn about debating is the importance of referencing credible, high quality sources. But what do we get from both sides in the final debate?
"One cop my dad knows got killed and my dads shocked face wordlessly told me that therefore nobody can ever protest anything"
"I saw a guy get lynched and some random dude said "an unjust law is no law at all" so I have the right to resort to violence if I consider a law unjust."
And the best argument of any 10 year old.
"Hitler agreed with the guy you are referencing, therefore that argument is invalid"
What were they thinking!!? It almost came across like actors were being dared to read ever more ludicrous lines while keeping a straight face.
The acting saved it (you could probably out that on Denzel's headstone)
