故事发生在明朝末年，袁承志（郭追 饰）是忠诚袁承焕（魏添财 饰）的儿子，在父子横死之后，袁承志由仆人带领，逃亡至华山，成为了华山派掌门人穆人清（李寿祺 饰）的弟子。一次偶然中，袁承志于一个山洞内发现了武林传奇金蛇郎君（龙天翔 饰）的遗骨，亦发现了失传已久的金蛇秘籍，就此练就了金蛇剑法。为了完成金蛇郎君的遗愿，袁承志踏上旅途寻找名为温仪（井莉 饰）的女子，又在途中结识了温青青（文雪儿 饰），袁承志就此被卷入了一段横埂在几代人之间的爱恨情仇之中。让袁承志没有想到的是，温婉可人的温青青，其真实身份正是金蛇郎君的女儿。

Raised to be a righteous martial artist, Yuan kicks off the story proper by finding a cave containing a skeleton, a treasure map, and a manual teaching him the Golden Snake style. Obeying a request hidden in the manual to give a portion of the treasure to the Golden Snake's old girlfriend, Yuan begins to seek the woman out - on the way solving the riddle of the Golden Snake, and how he came to his end.

화산파 제자인 원승지는 무공을 수련하던 도중 무림의 절세 고수였던 금사낭군의 유골과 그의 유서를 발견한다. 유서엔 기연을 얻게 될 자에게 자신의 무공은 물론, 숨겨진 황실의 보물을 선물로 주겠다는 내용과 함께 절강성에 사는 한 여인에게 황금 10만냥을 전하라는 내용이 기록돼 있었다. 에 이은 신필 김용의 두 번째 장편소설 을 영화화한 작품. 초기에 발표한 작품이기 때문에 후기에 나온 다른 김용의 작품과 비교해 다소 평면적이긴 하지만, 영화는 장철 특유의 넘치는 남성미를 강조, 액션의 묘미에 치중한다. 아버지의 복수를 하는 원승지와 불운한 출생의 과거를 지닌 온청청과의 애정관계를 그리고 있지만, 방대한 원작소설의 일부를 영화로 옮겼기 때문에 드라마보다는 대결의 재미가 있다.
