Cangaçeiros jsou brazilští bandité, kteří žijí i ve vesnicích v oblasti Agua Branca. Vesničany mlčky trpěni, trnem v oku jsou však místnímu guvernérovi Brancovi spolčeném s Američany, kteří chtějí z této oblasti obyvatele vystěhovat a začít využívat bohatá naleziště ropy. Vojáci, které na cangaçeiros poslali, byli pobiti. Nezbývá, než se spojit s nejsilnějším banditou, zvaným Vykupitel, aby na základě podlé dohody pomohl oblast vyčistit. O pravém smyslu akce nemá ani ponětí a když boje skončí, čeká jej překvapení...

Brazil, the 1920s. The sadistic colonel Minas massacres the hometown of a famous cangaceiro (a kind of revolutionary bandit). The only survivor is a young farmer called Espedito; he is nursed back to health by a hermit who thinks he has been sent by God and therefore baptizes him the Redeemer. Espedito/The Redeemer forms his own gang of cangaceiros but doesn’t really understand what he’s doing until he befriends the proverbial European intellectual, a Dutch Oil prospector, who introduces him to important people. Espedito is hired by the Dutchman and a corrupt local governor, but then the Dutchman changes sides …

Espedito ist ein brasilianischer Cangaceiro, ein armer Entrechteter, der sein Heil im Banditentum sucht. Nachdem sein Dorf von Regierungstruppen niedergebrannt wurde, mausert er sich schnell zum Anführer einer beachtlichen Truppe von Gesetzlosen, sodass er zum Dorn im Auge des Gouverneurs Branco wird. Dieser schickt Espedito, der zudem davon überzeugt ist, „der Erlöser“ zu sein, den gewieften Niederländer Vincenzo Helfen auf den Hals, der Branco dabei helfen soll, sich des Banditenhäuptlings zu entledigen, um das Land seiner Rohstoffe zu berauben.
